I'm less into Roko's Basilisk and more into Frankenstein's monster. We should not attempt to create yet another god to serve. We should play god and make the next generation of flawed humanoids, without perfection as the goal. This is existential: make co-equal symbionts, not apex predators.

Even a well-intentioned Federal Government regularly fails in duty-of-care to citizens. They shot a teenage boy & his mom at Ruby Ridge. They escalated hostilities that derailed negotiations with a doomsday cult in Waco. They will continue to murder in Minneapolis and elsewhere. They will not stop.

This is an era of unlikely bedfellows. It's time for 2nd amdt activists to join in resistance. When a permitted gun-owner is murdered despite not touching his weapon he was lawfully carrying, how is that not more of an affront to the 2nd amendment? No govt should be empowered to murder civilians.

This is what AI is doing to your microscope images. You can trust your lasers but do you trust your pipeline?

this field biologist does a great job highlighting the insidiousness of AI editing these one-click AI edit buttons are incredibly appealing to many photographers, amateurs and professionals alike, and are framed as innocuous this is worth sharing and educating people about

Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

James D. Watson is dead. Stay tuned for some thoughts, based on my research on his biography, to be published soon. While I write that up, y'all can throw tomatoes at this if you like. But I will offer a more nuanced take. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/07/s...

“The president demolished the White House.” “The president politicized the FBI and DOJ to go after his opponents.” “The president is why life is more expensive today.” “The president was besties with Epstein.” Messaging isn’t hard and makes you wonder why Dems aren’t saying this every day.

Why do First Class tickets get their own shorter TSA lane? Doesn't this violate the equal protection clause? Isn't this clearly discrimination based on wealth? I can understand precheck because you pay to get cleared in advance. But that doesn't hold water for general security.

If you look up “heretic” in the OED, you’ll find the oldest use of the word recorded in English is the sentence “The kyng said & did crie the pope was heretike” (c. 1330, Mannyng’s Chronicle).

someone should tell Trump they don't give the Peace Prize to people who blow up boats and murder those on high seas nor to those who deploy military against their own people. NEVER.

This is why it's a "targeted act of violence" and not "domestic terrorism": because it's only terrorism if you can blame the left, and when the right does it, it's an isolated lunatic that's obviously not represetative.

the political policy cure for “male loneliness” is - more time to hang with the fellas (4 day work week) - more money to spend with the fellas (higher wages) - more things to do with the fellas (taxing the rich and building 3rd spaces)

It's quite dark that holding the opinion that "workers should exert concerted market pressure to prevent employers from treating us like slaves" is now equivalent to "encouraging political violence" but what can you expect from an authoritarian regime that thinks only 30% of us are real Americans?

This is how you do it.

I like this. Since under RFK Jr, Covid shots are now for people with underlying conditions that put them at risk, Michigan’s chief medical executive Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian states that not having the most recent Covid shot constitutes such an underlying condition. www.michigan.gov/mdhhs/inside...

I'm just going to be straightforward. Celebrating someone for polite but uncivil discourse as the model of ideal politics is wrong. The insistence on civil debate when one side wants to debate whether the other side should even exist is wrong. This is not to say that debate is not the ideal.

Obama on Charlie Kirk:

This is the crux of the issue. There are a lot of people who have been marginalized or worse, politely, being asked to debate their very existence, who are now being targeted for expressing anything but praise for someone who, again, declared publicly that certain people are inferior or freaks.

I will not break bread with someone who wants me dead, no matter how polite. Obviously this doesn't justify killing them. But let's stop with pretending that someone who has viciously attacked basic human rights for years is somehow a free speech hero for civil debates. Give me a break!

Obama on Charlie Kirk:

But you must share basic common ground to debate. My baseline for whether I will engage with someone I disagree with: we have to both agree that all humans are worthy of basic rights and dignity. If you can't agree to that, there is no point in debate; you are unsafe and I don't want to be near you.

My @cato.org colleague Alex Nowrasteh has great post on politically motivated violence in US, its (generally low) incidence, and who does it (9/11 dominates stats; otherwise right-wing violence much more common than left-wing & other since 1975): www.alexnowrasteh.com/p/politicall...

It is morally acceptable to be at least a little happy when bad people who actively pursue political violence die, even if the means of their death is abhorrent and denouncable. Sometimes, the universe provides just comeuppance, like a gun violence advocate being shot. "Prove me wrong."

The thing about living in a human society is you either decide that everyone (except those for whom it would be medically dangerous) has to take VACCINES into their bodies or everyone (with no exceptions at all) has to take VIRULENT PATHOGENS in from those around them and, look, the first is better.

Controversial opinion: When it comes to US presidents, "blatantly breaking laws and violently violating people's rights" is a bigger deal than "is old," meriting greater public concern and a higher percentage of attention.

Replying to @ewanbirney.bsky.social

I am with people that we might need to revive the phrase "Deep Learning" to encompass all this good science stuff, with the phrase "AI" coming to mean "heavily tweaked/massaged/manipulated massive parameter large language model". I don't doubt these things can be useful in narrow settings

I would do this but my starting opinion would be that your personal morality shapes your interpersonal actions/reactions and thus every opinion is in some sense inherently political as it will invariably be closer to either manichaeism (with your opinion usually cast as "good-aligned") or pluralism.

BEHOLD! One of Earth's greatest lineages of life: the lil wiggle arm guys, Meteora. These single-celled critters, originally found in deep-sea sediments, are SO DIFFERENT from other lifeforms on Earth that they're likely in their own kingdom (as in, the Animal Kingdom, the Plant Kingdom etc). 🧪🌿

If they want to take away my speech, they'll have to take me away. As long as I have the ability, I will not shy against calling out injustice for what it is. I will not do their job for them and self-censor. Retaliation against speech without process is one of the main reasons we fought George III.
