New post: The Big Picture for the forthcoming UK Budget that the media largely ignores
mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2026/10/the-...
Because of tax rises already set in place, as well as recent data and current plans, the UK has the strongest 'fiscal credibility' of all the G7 economies.
Yeah, but I find it disturbing how ready people are to start thinking in these terms. There are US leftists here arguing that US should invade the UK because of our trans laws. And Canadians proudly hating America for sanctions while Canada rapes its natural environment. And everyone hates Israel.
Obviously I want the utmost damage to Trump in the midterms, for Congress to constrain him & for a Democrat president in a couple years time. But honestly something broke in my relationship w America when Trump won the second time. I can't imagine feeling excited for an American president again.
But there are good/bad/ ignorant people everywhere in only somewhat different different proportions. It's a global battle. Nothing good comes from giving up on people across a border.
so restricting Ukraine's Starlink was Musk's idea, but after Moscow took advantage he became "alarmed about the possibility of adverse consumer reaction in Europe" to the "night of carnage" and denied responsibility
I mean, it sounds like typical Elon
I basically think if you've ever written a 'defence spending has to go up' column (and I've written a fair few), you have no business asking any one else to take a hit from *that* if you won't even take the hit of not being on X.
Surely it's fair enough for a political movement to want to stick to it's original noble purpose. I certainly don't agree with the anti-migrant, white industrial nostalgia bias, but maybe it's a good thing that they don't want to abandon working class for prof and managerial.
Labour is no longer a working class party: its vote share is highest among the professional and managerial class.
It does sometimes feel like it wants to return to being a working class party entirely by alienating its new base.
Adapt with the times? Never!
This is the same San Diego that Trump has invited Iran to "take out"?

Theresa Villiers on Badenoch. Oddly I hope she's right but this is the latest in the Telegraph's 'Whisper it' series. The record of this series is not good.... (thread)
Please excuse me while I scream into a cushion at the thought of ALL the articles I had to write on the "UK productivity puzzle" in the 2010s www.ft.com/content/c819...
I remember back in the day an old lefty explaining how the Thatcherite Right proudly used "radical right" to falsely appropriate the positiveness of radicalism associated with the Left, in the same way the Nazis used "socialist".
First the real extremists are the actual Nazis you fucking idiot.
Secondly how is "radical right" more "Orwellian" than "far right"? That doesn't even make sense.
Wait, this is the same Telegraph that rails against the spendthrift ways of Gen Z for buying a sandwich for lunch instead of living entirely on the cheapest boiled greens available because that way they’ll have a house deposit saved in a mere 15 years? They need to make their mind up.
The Daily Telegraph, with its finger on the pulse of the nation, thinks that people taking a packed lunch to work is “pathetic” and a sign of societal collapse; and also thinks that said packed lunch includes sprouts.
There would be a danger of this kind of money buying elections. Except that since it's Farage you know most of it will just find its way into his pocket rather than any kind of campaigning.
Astounding story. Reform receives a *second* £36m donation from a crypto billionaire in 48 hours.
Christopher Harborne- the £5m benefactor- has matched Ben Delo's money pound for pound.
£72m in total. Approaching US politics sort of money.

The polling company JL Partners is unwilling to follow the rules, so should not be in the polling council. Also the Telegraph appears to have lied about the provenance of the poll it published. Even if they didn't know that Reform commissioned it, it was dishonest to suggest it was a Telegraph poll.
The legwork, and the sting, which seems to have caught out James Orr, Nigel Farage and Reform-UK was carried out by Verbatim Investigations who have dropped their own take on the story.
In a now deleted tweet, Brain of Britain, Adam Brooks, criticises Andy Burnham's performance at PMQs, even though it doesn't take place until tomorrow.
This article is utter garbage because it never mentions demand, it never mentions composition of 'traders' portfolios (more LNG, less pipe) and it buried this 2/3 of the way down in an article with 'panic' in the headline. Shameful gutter nonsense.

Just heard @rory-stewart.bsky.social on @therestpolitics.bsky.social say that "we [the UK] still consume more carbon than we have ever done—we just have the t-shirts made in China". I've heard this point being made elsewhere recently too. And it is simply not true.
I see all of the anecdatalists are out in force today after that Times shit-stirring about bis stops.
The nearly hit wards will have to declare a major incident by tea-time.
Is this the strangest on-camera interview I've ever done, lol?

The boats they are using are bigger but the overall number arriving is smaller. This is what a successful enforcement policy would look like - more boats are getting stopped forcing change of strategy by smugglers - but you would not know this from the alarmist bbc “LARGEST BOAT EVER” push alert
SUVs are higher at the front and three times more likely to kill a child when they hit them.
SUV drivers drag the child under their vehicle, and then they crush the child to death.
It's incredible that SUVs don't have higher tax, and why not lower speed limits.

Snow was general all over Stroud. It was falling upon the Tesco Express from its toilet seats and, further westwards, falling into its car park. It was falling too upon the chained trolleys. It lay drifted upon the dashboard of James Joyce's BMW . . .
BBC News - Why cheap power could matter more than clean power in the push for net zero - BBC News
www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
I'm baffled by this piece. Do I understand correctly...?
... Electric expensive because blah.
Therefore, instead of decarbonising power asap, ditch renewable plans for cheap ff power (from where?) to transition people quickly to electric cars + heatpumps, because then we'll accept price rises to decarbonise the electricity we're more reliant on???
The BBC undercover investigation into false immigration claims is deeply irresponsible journalism. It does not highlight that exploitation by unregulated advisors occurs because legal aid was cut and the system is insane to navigate.
I have seen lots of enthusiastic posting about what a great idea this is. And don't get me wrong, I get the frustration with electricity prices spiking so high when gas prices rise. But so far I've seen far too many half baked solutions being thrown around that don't really add up. 🔌💡 (1/12)
