I've been listening to a lot of Japanese indie/math rock this year, and two bands that I'm surprised haven't broken through omre outside of Japan are Veltpunch and Luminous Orange.

Luminous Orange's albums are all varied but consistently high-quality. They've gotten a few releases put out overseas, and a few things up on Bandcamp, and those are solid starting points. (They get a lot of love from r/shoegaze and other new-school shoegazer fans, which is entirely deserved.)

Veltpunch are just really good Japanese indie rock, with solid, catchy songwriting and unflashy, tight performances. They've been around forever and have done some but not a lot of soundtrack work, which probably accounts for their lack of popularity outside Japan.

Luminous Orange have also been around forever but are way harder to pigeonhole. Most of the time there's a strong C86 / Creation / Sarah Records influence, but they're unafraid to get experimental with harmonies and song structures and don't seem to be wedded too strongly to a core sound.
