I wouldn't say Tom Morello isn't a Lib It's that he's far more of a lib than the average lib - He advocates working-class empowerment, Indigenous rights, anti-racism, & human rights. He's anti-capitalist & VERY anti-establishment. One problem with average libs is he finds them too pro-establishment

Who gives a toss, can't musicians etc., just do their trade? Why does fkn politics have to come into everything we live and breathe! This is why we can't have nice things, throw your anger at the politicians and the money fueling all the corruption, not those narrating the story!

Because musicians are human beings that are allowed to express their political beliefs through their art, you fucking moron. You don't suddenly lose the right to speak about politics the moment you pick up a guitar.

One, I'm not sure how you can hold "why is everything political" and "throw anger at politicians and the rich" at the same time as if doing that isn't political...and two...because art is political?? Saying fuck the system it's broken and needs to be fixed is a political stance my guy

What? They are two separate statements. The first relates to anything said/spoken/expressed by entertainers, the second speaks to the rage we all feel that is then misdirected at those entertainers out of frustration from not getting answers from your representatives. Take your time.

"Why does fkn politics have to come into everything we live and breathe! This is why we can't have nice things..." Because art is inherently political. You can't have One or And Justice for All and claim you aren't political. The whole point is the music is that the system doesn't work.

Even Dave spotted that ffs, the title track from countdown is partly a pop at Hetfield for joining in on caged hunts. When even that lunatic has your number in 199fucking2 you know it's not a tough puzzle to crack.

bare minimum I figured everyone knew Hetfield sucked at LEAST since he cut off his hair but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Tom Morello is fine. I have thoughts about his fender advertisements, but the guy's heart is in the right place. Seriously. People were surprised that he didn't want to vote for an apologist for genocide. Remarkable. Like, what are we doing here.

I’m not really pissed at Morelo because my guess is he may never have voted for anyone who actually won an election. Some people are more interested in moral purity than winning.

I always regret posting about metal on here because there is no good way to say “I know more about this than you do” without triggering even more irritating replies

and then when someone does know about metal, half the time they take it as an insult and try to gatekeep you or one up you. one of the reasons i stopped posting on metal forums or trying to befriend folks at shows

Yeah! I’ve been figuring for my life with this book deadline but once I turn in my manuscript, I’m doing a big Salvo relaunch

I do have the feeling that "liberal" was once a direction along a line, rather than a point on it, but maybe I was just not paying attention...

Are you saying they were the bad guys? But...but they were trying to share God's word & the Arc Of The Covenant's power with everyone!?!

And they were totally wrong. It made the music industry much bigger. What it did was destroy the "we'll make an album every couple of years. A couple of songs will be good, but you have to buy the whole thing. Maybe we'll tour. Maybe we won't." That mentality is gone.

Speaking as someone who played in a metal band that reached a level of *local* notoriety: There were elements of Metallica's grievances that were on target. Their insistence on going after the fans downloading music was always fucked up. Musicians nowadays can have plenty of exposure.

It's just that nobody really cares. Nobody buys albums anymore unless they're fans, and it's hard to get new fans because the choices are endless. Meanwhile, Spotify is sopping up all the profits and fucking over the artists. It's only gotten worse for artists.

Hmm with Spotify shamelessly exploiting artists and AI labs not giving a toss about about ownership and copyright the sentiment has shifted somewhat in favour of Metallica's old Napster position. But suing the little guy was always wrong.

Neighbor has been helping recordmy folk tunes in his studio and his band is…metalcore is the term. Idk how to ID the kinds. When I read their Wikipedia it was like “several songs criticizing American militarism post 9-11”. Nice. He wore Public Enemy T-shirt to my first session. Pretty good sign.

It's doesn't make me stupid to have contempt for a careless privileged asshole who helped Trump into power and is smug about it.

morello lives in CA, so his vote for pres didn’t matter either way bc of the electoral college. he didnt help trump into power, billionaires, right-wingers, and democrats who did not do anything to hold trump to account for breaking laws and ran a shit presidential campaign helped him into power.

a socialist is not a lib, they are a leftist. a liberal is a lib, someone who supports capitalism. morello was being criticized for being left of liberals

I think of that definition as more of a neo-liberal capitalist right? i.e. the Democratic Party (by and large). “Lib” also gets lumped in with social issues in common usage, so I was trying to determine if Morello had said something (say anti-trans e.g.) of a more social or cultural context.

i get what you were asking. just wanted to clear up what kim kelly would almost certainly mean when she says lib, just from knowing her labor reporting

I go with Phil Ochs classic definition personally:

"In every American community, you have varying shades of political opinion. One of the shadiest is the liberal. An outspoken group on many subjects. 10 degrees to the left of center in good times, 10 degrees to the right of center if it affects them personally. So here is a lesson in safe logic"

Not least because liberal can mean "protecting people from the government", "protecting people (and corporations) from the government", "protecting people from corporations through the government", and probably at least two others.

Partly because that's who is in charge of the party that has positioned itself as liberal. The people espousing FDR liberalism are now called progressives, leftists, or even socialists.

on bluesky maybe use the word "liberal" to basically any normie over 45, even old school democrats, and they'll think you mean a stereotypical bluehair most of them don't even know what NEOliberal means

James Hatfield being an emotionally stunted reactionary is like a core part of metallica experience? The guy who wrote dyers eve was killed by the guy who wrote fuel.

Plus, that's a bold statement from someone whose music has been used to torture people arbitrary detained in an unlawful secret prison by his own government.

Maybe if Rage’s lyrics hadn’t been so subtle, we wouldn’t have this problem. Hetfield, on the other hand, I’m skeptical about. That wasn’t really him, that was AI. The real Hetfield would have ended the rant with “baaaay-bay!!”

Listening to Morello talk about how he couldn’t bring himself to vote for Kamala was nauseating. And ffs, Metallica were the ones who went after Napster bc they didn’t want to lose revenue.

As the Framers intended, the Electoral College disenfranchises many people's general election presidential votes. As a Californian, this includes Tom Morello.
