thinking fondly again of the college girl at the donut place, who made a little muslim boy bounce giddily out the door after she told him his donut was free, and who waved me away and said "you're good" when it was my turn to pay and then, when asked if there was a deal that day said "i hate my job"
If you want to know why Dems didn’t win enough earlier this century it was because the consultant class thought this way.
Me: "Even if it was unpopular, are you saying the Democratic Party should not speak out against the president sending migrants who have committed no crimes to be tortured in a foreign gulag?" @mattyglesias.bsky.social: "Yeah." Me: "Just stay silent?" Yglesias: "...You gotta win first."
I’m 100 percent sure Matty has read Letter from a Birmingham Jail. I’m also 100 percent sure he didn’t grasp its meaning.
A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

The new attack comes as polls show Democrat Janelle Stelson has a slight edge over incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Perry.
For my money, Eric is one of the best in the business, and he brings a much needed perspective to the field.
Some ~personal~ news: After five years, I have been laid off from @the-independent.com. I am grateful for the time I have had there. With that in mind, I am absolutely looking for new work opportunities, especially ahead if the midterms. My email is EMGarcia2009@gmail.com. My signal is emgarcia.85

Multiple polls showed McMorrow losing ground, not just Wedgewood. But yes, the individual/s responsible should probably be held accountable for this.
As one of the candidates featured in these polls - the infamous one in late June that showed me plummeting into single digits (which was at odds with our internals) - here's the impact of this "experiment"

Let’s be brutally honest: This is the most predictable idea of a certain generation. They’re entitled, have no value for community, and lack any substantive empathy. Boomers are nowhere near done with their attempts to wreck our communities and country.
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

One prominent prof on here has spent months deriding the college vote. Then there’s Kevin, understanding the value of this. It’s like one of them is an expert on the civil rights era and the other acts like he is.
I always have mixed feelings about these images. Yes, it's inspiring to see these college students committed to democracy, but the fact that they have to do anything remotely difficult to exercise their voting rights is enraging. Taking part in a democracy should be as easy as possible.

You think this is about implying that El-Sayed is an immigrant but no, it's about El-Sayed not being white. A person of color could live here for a thousand years (indeed, some have) and still be told to be "grateful."
JD Vance calls El-Sayed "a little weasel who should shut his mouth and show a little gratitude"
Back in the day, I did reporting on the shortage of mental health services in NePA and statewide. A lot of people thought this was a small part of a solution to this problem. Again, a small part. But important
In a continued push to practice to the full extent of their licensing and training, the lobbying group for nurse practitioners is pressuring state legislative candidates to commit to change ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms. From @wdownard.bsky.social

all of us just watched these university admins wield enormous power against palestinian student orgs, including unaffiliated ones, so these excuses land flatter than ever

Huh no one freaking out about border walls and migrant caravans anymore? Was it the kidnappings and torture camps? The clips of families ripped apart? Things got a little too real for you?
Remarkable outcome in Fox News' latest poll: 88% of U.S. voters say they are extremely or very concerned about corruption in government, beating every other issue including inflation www.foxnews.com/politics/fox...

Rep. #AndyHarris (R-Md.) showed that he doesn't under the First Amendment and that he opposes the constitutionally protected free press in this country. #JournalismMatters #NotTheEnemy
Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.

the only way to win a republican primary is to be a bigger piece of shit than your opponent in whatever way you can
It's really remarkable how in race after race, Republicans are saddled with the worst candidates imaginable - Paxton, Whatley, Husted, Rogers, Marshall, Moody, M. Collins, Graham... Some of them may win, but my god what a collection of losers, crooks, and dumbasses

I say this as someone with a masters in education who has taught in college, and had a father who was a college professor: most people who teach at colleges have zero expertise in education. It’s the opposite elementary and secondary, where people are experts in education & not their subject matter.
I'm in favor of free lunches and breakfast for poor kids as a matter of basic decency. But that's not really an educational issue, imo. They still have to go home at the end of the day.

Whether they like it or not, this is what ESPN has become. Stephen A. Smith gets a $40 million salary and the biggest platform possible to shout this crap on a daily basis across multiple shows.
"Now he calls it quits, not before the season. Not in the offseason…four games into the 2026 season, a dude that has been in the league forever, sits back and says I need to focus on my mental health" – Stephen A. Smith on Lane Johnson retiring
Asa former journalist I have a lot of thoughts on this.
Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.
