Hey everyone - Fark’s running an October subscription drive. We’re a bit short of our goal and could use a boost. fark.com/subscribe If you sign up for TotalFark this week you’ll get a special SOON badge. When “It Happens” the “SOON” badge will change to “It Happened!” Here are the two badges:

There needs to be severe penalties to states that have waiting times longer than 10-15 minutes, and 2 hours should be investigated with possible criminal penalties.

Voter suppression in Texas is working exactly as it was designed to work. Republicans closed 92 voting locations in the state's largest swing county and now voters are waiting in line two hours to vote.

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

Fascists cynically deploy liberal values to fascists ends wherever doing so is convenient (and then drop those values when they no longer serve a purpose). We've seen this with "free speech," "meritocracy," "freedom of religion," "free markets," etc. etc.

There do seem to be strong parallels between the US economy today and Japan in the late 80s, right before the lost decade began.

Today, I resigned as Vice Chair of the ODP Pride Caucus. The state party expects us to be a sales team, censoring our voices when we beg candidates not to trade on trans lives. I am still a Democrat, but I will not value party approval over true, defiant advocacy. Full text below. 👇

A huge chunk of elite poli-tastemaking is writing essays from the unstated perspective “Let’s just act as if this obvious liar is being genuine,” like people’s lives are just the score in a debate competition.

Impossible to understand how anyone could look at Rufo's career and conclude he was someone engaged in a "forthright defense of meritocracy." Rufo's entire career is built on the idea of purging people who don't think or look like him from positions of power.

Our ancient wisdom traditions have good reason for asking us to cultivate more compassion for present suffering, not less. If your ethical theory rejects this, then it's not worth the tokens it cost you.

This is idiotic. For any of this to work, both sides have to be willing to engage in good faith. When one side happily transitions from free speech absolutism to firing librarians in the space of a single year, it becomes clear that they aren't having discussions in good faith.

The best cure for ideological bias is find someone on the other side and go to lunch with them.⁣ ⁣ Sometimes we disagree about facts. Sometimes we disagree about values. Figuring out which is which is fun part. https://newsletter.platypuseconomics.com/p/my-libertarian-friends-were-right

When military police found Adrian Martinez's body, his bags had already been packed for his trip home to Houston. The army says he took his own life, but their investigation seemed to ignore one key fact: He was a sexual assault whistleblower.

Note how there is no (0) person, whether politician or activist, quoted in this piece who‘s in favour of more liberal asylum policies, and as for quoting any actual refugees, their function is to be the silent object of other people’s violent imaginings, not to have a voice or personhood

I don't think NPR is actually terrified of being tagged as left-wing. There's a whole cohort of "left-wing" media whose entire purpose is laundering conservative talking points and acting as the "thin entering wedge" of right-wing propaganda. They need the facade of leftism to make that work.

I was reading a short thread where people were discussing how increased fuel charges are making everything super expensive in Alaska and it took all my willpower not to drop into the thread with screenshots of the Alaskan presidential vote in 2016, 2020 and 2024.

Honestly, if this person is capable of being so confidently incorrect, maybe we should talk another look at their published research. What else have they gotten wrong because of their biases?

Today a preeminent climate scientist said that building a bike lane in Berkeley California is bad because not everyone can bike to get groceries. The US climate movement has a cars blindspot, and it's why we aren't making progress the way other countries are.

Nixon conspired with North Vietnam. Reagan conspired with Iran, Bush Sr was directly involved with Iran-Contra, Bush Jr only won after the Supreme Court intervened, and Trump conspired with both Russia and conservatives within the FBI. Eisenhower was the last Republican to be legitimately elected.

Google is signalling their willingness to act as Trump's agents when he attempts to fully subvert democracy.

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Where does this madness with the renaming on Google end? Can Trump call the Atlantic Ocean the “Trump Ocean” and they’ll fall in line? Can he name Minnesota “Big Fat Loserville” and it goes on the map the next day?

so Trump 2.0’s war on every single non-evil job did destroy my career and traumatize me a lil bit, but the thing is that, like many people in my position, I’m quite capable of synthesizing that trauma into a single-minded thirst for revenge

There it is. While you struggle to afford groceries, or find any that are edible, and pay thousands more every year in gas, rent, utilities, childcare, and healthcare, they are laughing all the way to the bank.

The majority of Republicans were apathetic about trans people up until the last 5-10 years. What happened around then? Metoo and Epstein. Hegseth leans so hard into anti-trans because it forces progressives to shift from going after pedophiles to protecting trans people. He's protecting himself.

Eric Columbus@ericcolumbus.bsky.social

The term “transphobic” is so inadequate for bigotry like Hegseth’s. He doesn’t fear trans people like some fear spiders or heights. He hates them with a passion. It’s an evil choice, not a psychological malady.

THREAD. Contrary to what you are being told, 40 years of polling have established that shifting money away from police/prisons toward social services is one of the most popular public policies among *all* political demographics. But it's not just that, it goes way deeper.
