"People who believe their choices don't matter choose poorly." Indeed.

But even if you don't care about Israelis, I don't think people appreciate just how much this kind of democratic backsliding influences policy and geopolitics. People who do not believe voting matters and that their representatives answer to them do not produce good governments.

On 12 April 1948, Eleanor Roosevelt wanted to add #freedom of movement – ‘without red tape of any kind’ – to her husband’s Four Freedoms. Yet, a few months later, Art 13 of the Universal Declaration, which she was chairing the drafting of, guaranteed only the right to leave a country. #HumanRights

Nearly everything about the home. Do you remember how shabbily things at the cheaper end were built 40-50 years ago? And don’t get me started on the wonders of induction.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

As Kukathas has pointed out: immigration controls often cost our freedoms, as well.

Why is this student so upset about the mushroom, though? What could it have done to make her protest across the whole continent

Third, you can't ignore training. German police are trained in a fundamentally different way than American police. If nothing else, it's 2 years vs. (at best) 6 months. The selection effect there is big. Plus the training is just ... different. We aren't hiring the same ppl.

A common source of irritation for many non-centrist police reformers is a call for “more” or “better” training. And I generally agree: micro-tweaks to training can‘t change culture, and you can’t train culture. Except! What if we adopted Euro training times? Self-selection would be a BEAST.

My folk theory of one aspect of Everything That Is Happening is that for a long time we had technologies of making publics visible that seemed to compress political debate down into mostly-one dimension, but (a) that turned out to be shit, and (b) when other technologies came along, it was disrupted

right! i almost never see people discuss that voters simply facing multivariate policies or having multidimensional preferences undoes the intuitive logic of the median voter model. (because of this pref ordering, plus there's no single intuitive metric of distance in higher dimensional space)

I’ve been shocked at how police are responding to demonstrations generally. The smallest, completely unrelated gathering of a couple hundred workers gets met with riot gear. www.lemonde.fr/campus/artic...

Somehow, all these centuries later, the French have yet to learn that the presence—or simply the rumour—of excessive force can turn otherwise peaceful protests toward violence.

In this “Jaws of Hell” roof boss from 12th-century Norwich Cathedral, dark spotted devil with long hair and cloven foot (at L) ushers condemned souls into the gaping fanged mouth of a hideous monster

The text is bad enough. But what are we doing with these sleeves, men? Either embrace the kimono fully or get the sleeves back above the bicep where God and Brando put them.

Somehow, all these centuries later, the French have yet to learn that the presence—or simply the rumour—of excessive force can turn otherwise peaceful protests toward violence.
