We need more of this! They want to steal our cognition. Sam Altman has said he wants intelligence to be a ‘metered resource’ in the future. It’s still insane to me that our higher ed leaders are rushing over themselves to adopt this technology and force it down the throats of teachers and students

AOC: "As AI begins to encroach in our society, their goal is to take your cognition away from you. AI's goal is to take your thoughts away from you, your ability to think away from you, so that you become dependent on a machine ... reading books is active resistance"

But I was unprepared for the shock of coming across a quote attributed to Judith Butler that it appears they never said. When I reached out to Neiman, she did not provide a citation. When I wrote to Butler, they responded that they had not said these words.

If we are to be champions of “truth,” as Neiman asks of us, it seems a good idea to start with accurately citing those we criticize. In an era where humanistic scholarship is under threat from the right as well as from corporations, this kind of sloppiness is unacceptable

In some ways it’s a beautiful book. And while I think there’s certainly a lot to criticize, it is a useful cry to action in the face of fascism

I'm scruffy because I've been writing and posting all day. BUT, I had to make a video because as of this post we've raised $4,542 and we are $458 dollars away from $5,300 in matching donations! And we need your help to get there by 5p CST!!! Here's the link: givebutter.com/LGBTQMediaGi...

If you don’t want to do things like read your kid a book, you probably don’t actually want to be a parent

Jess Calarco@jessicacalarco.com

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

What will it take for university administrations to actually take sexual assault seriously ffs? Everyone who has ever had to deal with Title IX offices knows that they exist to protect the institution and don’t really care about survivors.

The provost of Dartmouth, at which I teach, has been using AI to write both academic papers & national op-eds, according to brave reporting by @thedartmouth.bsky.social. Many students are already bitter about AI. This leaves us as faculty no ground to stand on. www.thedartmouth.com/article/2026...

That it somehow also manages to be wrong is the most unhinged part of this chart. The century begins at year 0, not year 1.

I too have sometimes thought that a wall chart of this nature would be a useful addition to any History classroom.

Finally reading this exposé about how the AHA has been using funds to hire a corporate lobbyist to quash its own members’ views. It’s entirely dystopian and I hope for the day when we have leadership that is actually responsive to the views of its membership. www.chronicle.com/article/a-sc...

I keep wondering how people like this deal with questions at conferences or from their students, since they clearly don’t put in the effort to learn or ponder anything themselves. Or do they have the LLMs handle those too?

I literally don’t use AI for anything. And where it’s forced down my throat (eg automated receptionists) it’s made my life strictly worse. I would welcome it disappearing overnight.

I have one answer.

The waning appetite for book reviews is really depressing. I used to write tons of them and slowly over time, each publication I used to write for seems to have lost interest in them.

I also appreciate Emily Wilson as a woman in a male dominated role, by which I don’t mean translator or classicist or public scholar but rather “curmudgeon.”

Apparently Emily Wilson has reached the hey kids get off my lawn stage of her career.

‘Nolan has read at least the first line of my translation of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘥𝘺𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘺 into iambic pentameter. In one interview, he cited my version of it: “Tell me about a complicated man.” But I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.’ New, by Emily Wilson www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

As Trump's anti-left Red Scare escalates, The Atlantic is helping normalize dehumanizing rhetoric by describing socialists as a "parasite." The Atlantic is a dangerous, reactionary propaganda rag disguised as Reasonable Discourse.

My book baby has arrived! 🤩 Not for the first time, my wonderful editors @yalebooks.bsky.social have delightfully surprised me: the colours on the jacket catch the light (I'm told it's called 'spot gloss')! It really is a thing of beauty. #books #booksky #histsci #queerhistory 🌈📚🗃️

One thing I’ve noticed after 6 months as co-editor of the Journal of Social History: younger scholars at less wealthy institutions and with less secure employment are more likely to say yes as reviewers. Senior scholars at elite institutions rarely do. Smdh

TBH I feel like Mamdani has bent over backwards to demonstrate that he's not remotely antisemitic, and guys like Frum who will call him an antisemite anyway on the basis of his religion and anti-Zionism are doing the work of bona fide antisemites

I hate this guy so much

This kind of thing is exactly why tenure is supposed to exist. Professors aren’t supposed to fear they may lose their job if they say something politically unpopular.

I remember when a professor at my Alma mater compared gay marriage to all kinds of heinous things and the (lesbian) president stood up for his academic freedom against alumni calling for him to be fired.
