The orientation I want congress to have: productive conflict is GOOD. Dems have a real credibility gap. They need to communicate clearly to the public what they are for. Hold the regime accountable and force Trumpists to oppose popular stuff. Don't muddy the message with watered down bipartisan BS.

Leaders of the No Kings movement are already gearing up for the next major grassroots campaign: Making sure congressional Democrats don’t wimp out. My first piece at @newrepublic.com! (Reposted to update link card) newrepublic.com/article/2168...

Illinois’s population of high-income earners ($500k+) almost doubled between 2013 and 2023, but the millionaires who do leave are real loud, cranky, pains in the ass about it so the Trib Ed board tries to make it a problem for the rest of us

Chicago Tribune@chicagotribune.com

From the Editorial Board: Illinois already has a problem with affluent residents moving out of state as the tax burden has grown. Adding another 3 percentage points to income above $1 million is the equivalent of posting a flashing “exit this way” sign for those who remain.

Please indulge me while I post this once more for folks who may be too busy during the week and only peek at Bluesky on the weekend. The NY Times invited me to explain why I think they're failing in their duty to warn the public about the danger of a dictatorship. And they posted the video online.

Note: Illinois varies. Most counties have started early voting. But not Cook County (pop. 5million+). City of Chicago early voting starts @ 2 downtown sites Oct 1. Suburban Cook County early voting starts @ 6 sites Oct 7. Both Chicago & suburban Cook offer greatly expanded early voting sites Oct 19.

My brother, if we win the Democratic Party primaries then we ARE the Democratic Party

Jaime Harrison@jaimeharrison.bsky.social

I say this with no ill will or animosity: if you hate the Democratic Party, then please don’t run for our nomination. Don’t use our resources. Don’t rely on our volunteers. Don’t use our infrastructure. Don’t ask Democrats to invest their time, money, and energy in your campaign.

We found cases in which Cook County prosecutors knew someone was in ICE custody and still requested a warrant when that person failed to show up to traffic court. Advocates argue it’s a violation of defendants’ due process rights. (Co-published with @chicagoreader.com)

Yet another reason why Eileen O'Neill Burke sucks: Her CCSAO knowingly seeks arrest warrants for immigrants that miss court dates because they are held in ICE detention. Shameful.

Here in Illinois, we’ve protected access to vaccines. But to prevent the spread of measles and other illnesses, we need to bring that fight to the federal level. That’s exactly what I’ll do when I get to Washington.

This week, the Supreme Court finally killed off the Voting Rights Act of 1965. I've spent the past decade studying the VRA and the attacks on it, so I thought I would offer some historical perspective, and where I think we're headed. This will be a long thread; buckle up.

Doing some @unraveledpress.com spring cleaning and noticed a folder named "Opinions." In it, one forgotten, untitled document from March 2025. It's still relevant, so here it is in it's entirety:

Just shameful that CPD effectively vetoed the participation of independent immigration and legal experts. Those experts were specifically requested by the more than 2,000 Chicagoans who petitioned for this meeting.

Simultaneously, they mock & degrade women athletes for not being athletic enough, and then when a few of us are that athletic, they say we must not be real women. The end state of this reasoning is a world where “real” women don’t — and then can’t — play sports. Policing gender hurts women athletes.

This is an obvious overreach & bad logic, but bigger picture: this was only possible because we lack privacy protections and every scrap of data about us is collected, packaged, and sold every single day.

This is bonkers. “According to the school district, her daughter’s new student enrollment form was denied due to ‘license plate recognition software showing only Chicago addresses overnight’ in July and August.”

RCV is the long term solution. In the meantime, kudos to @evanstonroundtable.bsky.social for commissioning not just one, but two IL-09 polls to help inform their readers. (and releasing the details and cross tabs)

THIIIIIIIIIS. And not just here. All over the place. Like, I’d love a future Dem President to say “I’ve scoured the Constitution and can’t find a ‘major question’ rule anywhere in it. So I’m just going to ignore that effort to arrogate power to yourself. That imbalance? Checked.”

reading over Malliotakis v. Williams and lowkey think New York courts/the NY Redistricting Commission should be like...since the Supreme Court clearly lacked jurisdiction to intervene in the case at this time, we are treating it as the nonbinding advisory opinion that it is, thanks for the input tho

Raja’s “record places him firmly in the camp of corporate-aligned, MAGA-lite politics. The kind of broken politics that smiles for the camera while quietly empowering state surveillance, billionaire deregulation, and authoritarian allies. Illinois deserves better.”

/6 ICE is a monument to totalitarianism, lawlessness, and bigotry. It should be ripped out and woodchippered root and branch and replaced with something focused on the concept that you can’t defend the rule of law by burning it down.
