Very much looking forward to listening to this later, not least because Hankinson’s Raoul Moat book is a great book so I look forward to this next one.

drilling for more gas then telling us to stockpile because of the climate crisis is like digging a deeper and deeper hole because you know a guy who sells long ladders

Such an incomprehensible lack of self awareness. If I had done what she did to this country, I would simply curl up in a ball and never leave the house. But no, she is constantly wanging on about how everyone failed but her.

Has there ever been a politician who has responded more embarrassingly to losing office than Liz Truss?

Jackdaw will not bring down bills or protect jobs. This is an irresponsible decision from a government that seems to care more about the profits of fossil fuel companies than the money in your pocket or the safety of our planet.

Approving the Jackdaw gas field solves none of our problems, while contributing to the existential crisis of climate breakdown. The government has privileged special interests above the general interest. It's a shameful, cowardly decision.

jackdaw drilling is labour 100% telling everyone they don't care about the climate or the environment. they shouldn't be allowed to get us all killed just bcos shell 'lobbied'( bribed ) them. im sick and tired of how corrupt this government is.

The freeport and Houchen have been a disaster for Teesside that has quietly continued in the background with only very occasional coverage outside the area. I genuinely don’t know how he keeps getting voted in.

This is an interesting point in Emma’s thread. My husband has been a British citizen since 2006 but worked here since 2000 so will still be counted as a foreign national “taking” a British job.

Emma Monk@monkemma.bsky.social

The dataset allows you to break it down by the nationality of the person currently in the job. Another caveat: Nationality is recorded at the point someone first registers for NI. This status doesn’t change if and when they become British citizens. So it is likely an overcount of foreign workers

So they're at it again 🙄 Torturing valid HMRC data to create wildly misleading headlines, designed to invoke fear and anger about immigrants. Same old, same old... (and you'll see just how old shortly!) 🧵1/28

This was fascinating. All the deep dives are so interesting but this was something else.

This is one of the most chilling Bunkers I’ve done – the true story of how a Jewish journalist catalogued the dreams of ordinary Germans as Hitler took power, and what they meant. Listen – linktr.ee/bunker_pod

An interesting thread, well worth a read

OK, there is something very, very weird going on in the press right now. It certainly appears, from the outside, as if certain people are being very much protected in a way that was not afforded to certain other people! Let's start with the facts around Lola Salem... 🧵1/

This is also just empirically untrue as a matter of reading consumption: women do, in fact, read books by men. It’s men who do not read books by women. I suspect the reason is not “biological.”

If you care about democracy & justice, centre Brazil’s election. A global right-wing kleptocratic criminal network, led by powerful forces in the US, Israel and Russia, is operating across borders. No democracy can withstand this in isolation. Just Democracies need a global coalition of their own.

Badenoch on #R4Today claiming the Tories’ problems started with the Coalition when they “had to make compromises” and were perceived as “not proper Conservatives”. Cameron/Osbourne absolutely steamrollered the Lib Dems, got all they wanted, and left Clegg &c. as patsies. What is she on?

I feel like stories like this aren’t getting anywhere near enough traction (maybe that is just me not seeing it). This is terrible, not least as someone about to start the uni open day carousel again, but for staff, students and the wider uni sector.
