The only people who think book banning is good publicity are authors who sell so many copies they wouldn't notice. Okay, cool, the ban didn't sink Stephen King's career? Try interviewing a queer author whose book hasn't hit four digits.

Darcie Little Badger@littlebadger.bsky.social

Posting this because there’s a misconception that being challenged/banned is good publicity that’ll boost sales. In my experience, the opposite is true.

apropos of previous thread by John Wiswell: writers have a lot of solidarity when it comes to contracts. if you are a new writer and you think something might be hinky about your contract, it is completely fine to ask other professional writers even (especially) if you don't know us.

Things got more insane just about as soon as I posted this last night. DHS is now arguing that we cannot even put the names of ICE officers in our lawsuit against those officers. Their position is that, if a defendant works for DHS, they cannot be named in a lawsuit. Never seen anything like it.

Jared@jaredmcclain.bsky.social

It's been a struggle for reporters to get DHS to provide the names of officers who violate people's civil rights. Now, in our case against DHS's construction-site raids, the government is arguing in court that its employees names are "confidential" and should not be made public during litigation.

thanks so much for reading! not quite sure what i wrote either tbh 😆

I just finished reading "Home/Body" by @ph-low.com from @uncannymagazine.bsky.social 72. I am not entirely sure what it is I just read, but it felt magical. It is 2nd person perspective, which is always a different experience. Definitely deserves a reread. www.uncannymagazine.com/article/home...

I've heard folks from outside the US, esp. non-anglophones, say we're "weird about AI" (as in, *markedly* more anti-AI). If true, I think it boils down to this: a sense that the power structures in our society are not aligned to bring any good to normal folks. It's a big club and you're not in it.

Me since 2012: Everything abt "AI" as currently construed is inextricably woven w/ carcerality, capitalism, white supremacy (w/ racism, ableism, sexism, & LGBTQ+ hate being foundational thereto), hegemony, & kyriarchy, & we must name, examine, & deconstruct those before we can build something better

I am in competition with other authors in the same way a wounded man is in competition with medics.

Jukka Särkijärvi@nitessine.bsky.social

The idea of authors being in competition with each other is bizarre to me. Books aren't cars. We don't get just one.

marketing bears this out: books marketed using identity sell more than books marketed without identity. i'm real tired of y'all picking books to make you feel good as opposed to having a genuine interest in what someone like me has to say.

actual hot take: y'all, generally speaking, are not interested in supporting BIPOC and queer authors when they are not writing about Hurt and Trauma because it's not educational to you. even if the books have BIPOC and queer casts and are in new settings.
