"Your tax service - here to support", it says on the envelope. And the letter inside tells me, in a supportive way, that I have underpaid tax this year. But I don't have to do anything, because caring sharing HMRC will painlessly collect the shortfall over the coming year. Truly, they're on my side.

The first nuclear reactor in Western Europe was built in Oxfordshire, at the Harwell research site. I visited GLEEP when I was a student, gaining work experience on another reactor, DIDO. There's no more steam from the cooling towers; all the reactors on the site have gone the way of the dinosaurs.
October 19th marks Oxfordshire Day! Today is an opportunity to recognise Oxfordshire's history, identity and culture. Fun fact! Did you know that the world's first scientifically described dinosaur was identified from fossils found in Oxfordshire?
To the whole family's amazement, my grandparents (whose motto was "buy the cheapest") bought a colour set in the 1960's, when the only colour programmes were on BBC2. It was great going to their house on Sunday afternoons to watch the cricket, at least until they switched over to The Golden Shot.
My answer to this question on X: I reached 17 watching only Black & White TV. We learned to find truth in gradients of gray.
I spent two childhood years living in Nordrhein-Westfalen when my father was working for the British Forces. Living on a military base was a bit of an artificial existence, but we still got to see and enjoy a lot of the surrounding area, and I've been back many times since. Lots of happy memories.
Dear people of the UK, this Prize is for you! In 1946, the British founded the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. 80 years on, NRW says "Thank you", presenting its highest award, the State Prize, to the people of the UK, recognising the deep friendship between the state and the UK.
It's really very simple. If you say "Sorry" when someone bumps into you, you're English.
"I don't think you have to be white to be English - if you are born and bred in England, and you feel English, you have every right to be English". Nadhim Zahawi, came as an 11 year old, identifies primarily as British. He doesn't see English as closed to Marcus Rashford or Rishi Sunak

Nice to see the B's topping the poll. The last time I stood in a multi-member election I did indeed get the most votes of any of my party's candidates. On every other occasion the electorate has been singularly unmoved by my position on the ballot paper. ☹️
In today's @navigatepolitics.uk weekly roundup, I analysed how candidates surnames' dictate how well they do within party slates in multi-member wards. 72% of the time, the candidate 1st alphabetically received the most votes. Surnames starting with Z topped their slates just 6% or the time!!
It answers every question with "I'm on my tea break" or "It's more than my job's worth".
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei announced today that the AI firm’s previously-unannounced flagship model “was British this time.” Amodei went on to say “this one turned out British this time”, explaining: “It just got more British during training. So watch out for that.”

Did someone say town halls? I snapped this magnificent municipal edifice in Hunstanton, Norfolk, in evening sunshine just today.
Ooh town halls! V chuffed to be quoted throughout Fiona Wagstaff's lovely article on town halls in August's Homes&Antiques. Had lovely chat with her on their history/society/architecture. She did fab job distilling into an article! Interest piqued? Buy my book! www.amberley-books.com/town-halls.h...
