Turing notes how ppl learn from their environment over the course of a lifetime, and that intelligent machines would have to be similarly adulterated.

Not a big leap, but a few things Turing expected computers would be better than us at: language learning, translation, cryptography, and mathematics.

Prescient, but fascinating what isn't there: we took Turing's path, but in the intervening years matured our language to cast world learning as plagiarism and copyright infringement.

One of the traps Turing notes - which is still a hitch for me and many others - is couching the discussion in the capabilities of the present.

The Society for Bringing Fire to Man did not ask for this work to be done. We reject Prometheus' assertion that this advances our subject, and urge others to cease working with the Titan of Foresight.

Toying with bespoke FM1 firmware fits nicely as a part of the act of tinkering

Flo 🔶@faz.ms

It's amazing to see people now just buying cheap hardware off AliExpress and turning it into 10x the value by building better firmware with Opus 5.5. For example, this 60$ synth now has firmware options that add lots of new features or even turn it into a Groovebox.

crying in M̶C̶P̶ skills

a weird inversion with LLMs is the models improve faster than the tinkerers when i see people with custom workflows and setups they're all addressing problems that don't exist anymore the person naively using vanilla codex is more likely to be experiencing state of the art

Logging in once a day gives me whiplash. Bsky: If OpenAI was serious about helping, they'd release all their math problems prior to vetting and manuscript prep, so we know what they're working on. Day 2: OpenAI posts what they're working on. Bsky: Ugh.

"For months there have been reports that Anthropic 'nerfs' models some days or weeks after release" Should probably make that *years*

Um, wow? Opus 5.5: "make the same message much more interesting to a social media audience that loves anime and quick clips and compressed learning" One shot. Also, please do stay for the closing song.

Hey Claude, "Pick a problem or mystery that obsesses you and solve it as best you can & make a movie we can share on social media about it" So it took a crack at the Voynich Manuscript & failed. Then it made this movie, which is pretty interesting to watch and a good explainer.

Replying to @ponder.ooo

i like how they depict "we accidentally gave the model internet access" as just a tiny little missing screw, just this very tiny subtle hole in the security. rather than, yknow, just completely forgetting to block internet access

The recent popularity of the move to blame AI firms for ineffective *marketing* is mostly: a) a lot of people now realize they were wrong to spend 3 yrs insisting the tech was useless + b) “I was wrong” is a sentence most humans can’t write. = c) “they explained it badly.”

Talk to the people who would use this for dream use cases — the cancer scientists, the people who want to make material goods out of it — and they will tell you it’s either a marginally useful if unreliable trick or completely useless. It has produced 0% of the utopian products promised.

Microsoft auto-updated my browser to a version that only runs on a newer OS than Apple supports for my (perfectly fine) computer.

Guy who thinks "Jurassic Park was shut down because the dinosaurs escaped" is a PR story to build hype for Jurassic World.

There's something wholesome about the relationship coding agents have with their auto mode classifiers. How they listen and acknowledge the concerns of their partner (albeit just one way)

I think people don't realize why Gemini Omni is different than other video AIs. It is fully multimodal, so it can edit video natively, too I took the famous "train " movie from 1896 & made it a bullet train, LEGO, added a time traveler, a centipede, muppets... (note the reflections and shadows?)

Why do microwaves keep spinning during the 'heat off' bits of cooking at a lower power level? Is it a user psychology thing, or just easier mechanically to keep it going?

Kinda wild to see people surprised at how good Jokic is. I genuinely thought that underneath ephemeralities and allegiances, all basketball fans uncontroversially agreed that he's the best player in the world
