A man builds an IED. He sets it off in a busy public street. Shrapnel flies about hitting cars, homes and a child's bedroom. It's a miracle nobody is injured. And Reform MP Sarah Pochin calls his imprisonment "disproportionate" and "two tier justice."

Happy Manchester City Appeal Announcement Day! (I know nothing, but I think we’re all anticipating it.) PL Rules, r. W.86 provides Standard Appeal Directions that would ordinarily see, inter alia, an appeal concluded within 12 weeks of being made. However, those directions can be varied (W.85).

While I'm sure these are all individually deserving of the appointment, there's something quite striking about this line up in this day and age.

Disappointed this wasn't a policy announcement. The problem with football's alcohol ban isn't that it's 'discriminatory', it's that it is ineffective at reducing alcohol related disorder and that it more likely increases, rather than reduces, risks to public safety. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukBurnham brands ban on football fans drinking alcohol in stands as 'discrimination'The prime minister opposes the law - in place since 1985 - and believes there is a case to remove it.

And the 'alcohol in stands' issue is only half the issue. The 'no alcohol on football specials' may cause more problems. An evidence-based evaluation of the whole statute is needed. This is a 2011 paper but I've yet to see any peer-reviewed research challenging it. www.academia.edu/9088741/On_t...

It will be interesting to see how the police response develops to repeated assemblies by this group. There are operational (and I argue legal) reasons why public order conditions, disperals, and arrests are more likely at repeated gatherings. inews.co.uk/news/no-mask...

A huge amount of effort, from police, the CoP, & academics has gone into the slow, quiet revolution in football policing in this country. It's not perfect, & things would be simpler without the alcohol prohibitions, but it's a real success story for UK policing. www.theguardian.com/football/202...

I'll make myself unpopular now, but peaceful assembly, even if disruptive and unlawful, and even if being carried out by horrible people, is a human right and the police are obligated to protect it. The failure to do so in some other high profile cases does not change this legal position.

Surely you can already do this as a condition of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order?

It’s time to stop the Spex Offenders. Nobody should be secretly filmed through smart glasses and have it shared with millions online. Liberal Democrats are demanding stronger safeguards, including a ban on convicted sex offenders being able to purchase them.

According to reports, the government is looking at exempting anyone convicted of ‘unlawful act’ manslaughter from early release. This could prevent two of PC Harper’s killers from leaving prison in January - but it would come with complications. (1/4) www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

Broadly, football policing operations should be congratulated for holding their nerve in the face of the post-pandemic uptick in disorder. Continuing good practice (of course there is always some bad practice) has led to the problem in E&W coming under control in contrast to many other countries.

Public disorder is up 11% but more serious violent disorder is down 17%. This does not seem to tally with the increase in "serious incidents" in the Reported Incidents Statistics, hence my reservations about relying, at this time, on those incidents stats for season-by-season trends.

Arrests for racist chanting, pitch incursion, and use of pyro are now below pre-pandemic levels. Touting arrests remain ludicrously low. Arrest rates remain at 4 supporters per 100.000 (pre-pandemic levels). Bans remain higher than since 2012, but this largely reflects the post-lockdown disorder.

We must always be careful trying to measure criminality/disorder through statistics of police action. The new Reported Incidents stats should in time be a better measure, but the discrepancy in this season's picture suggests they are still bedding in and not yet ready to be used for judging trends.

The arrest stats support a trend of football disorder returning to pre-pandemic (very low) levels. *Taking away new offences*, arrests are still 15% higher than pre-pandemic, but they are 28% down on the first season after lockdown (when we saw a worldwide uptick in football disorder and violence).
