We lost our beloved dog Monty yesterday. A fiercely independent rescue, with strong likes (sunbathing, toy hedgehogs) and dislikes (rain, horses), he was a part of too many cherished moments to count. Rescuing Monty in 2013 was one of the greatest honors of my life. RIP--you were a very good boy.

Does anyone actually read the syllabus? Apparently so! @mbkplus.bsky.social and I debate who should be calling the shots on what is and is not taught in university courses.

Lula is to my left. Magyar is to my right. And I don’t care in the slightest, because they are the candidates of democracy against autocracy.

For legal market watchers (a niche group on @bsky.app), Kirkland's growth is not receiving enough attention, imo. For example, it entered Texas in 2014 and is now the largest firm in the state by headcount. It will probably reach 1,000 lawyers in the state in the next five to ten years.

The ICC has outstanding arrest warrants against two national leaders for war crimes. One of whom the Trump administration just lauded as a "humanitarian" and the other one President Trump endorsed for reelection. And of course the Trump administration is trying to destroy the ICC.

I see that there is a wapo story a few days ago about the office of legal counsel so this is my cue to remind you that the best time to have abolished OLC was the day after it was formed, the second best was the day after torture memos, and the third best is today.

I realize there is a Circuit split on this question, but one could be forgiven for believing that SCOTUS supports the Miller / Dhillon vision of education.

So impressed with this rising generation of Democratic Party stars in the US. Such a contrast to their elders, who so often seem like old-school Republicans but a bit less racist.

I just did a spot on @smerconish.bsky.social's radio show on this. Whatever one thinks about the law school graduate / lawyer distinction, Zacharia served as the general counsel of a non-profit without being a member of any state bar. That is unauthorized practice of law and a crime.

Josh Chafetz@joshchafetz.bsky.social

1/ Katie Zacharia is obviously an incompetent press secretary for a wannabe authoritarian president, but I find the whole "she says she's a lawyer, but she's not barred!" discourse a little weird.

Stuff like this is why the Canadian political establishment is (correctly, IMO) assuming that Democrats can NOT be trusted to return the bilateral relationship to the status quo ante going forward.

My first stop was Alberta, the only province not boycotting Californian wines. I spoke to provincial leaders about the importance of the Canadian market to California farmers and the importance of continuing close collaboration on dairy, beef and energy trade.

“Is the Court good” and “Are the courts good” are severable questions, but in a world in which the Court doesn’t respect the courts I think we need to protect the latter by taking an aggressive stance towards the former.

This is a fascinating exchange. Healy unsurprisingly comes off as defensive, but what is most revealing is his belief that @nytimes.com reporters should not be arbiters of truth.

Mark Jacob@markjacob.bsky.social

🧵🧵🧵 The NY Times posted a 15-minute video today in which I got to tell NYT what’s wrong with its coverage. They said they saw my critical posts on Bluesky and invited me to do a video with them to air my grievances. Weird, right? I didn’t hold back. I blasted their sanewashing of MAGA extremism.

TBH I don't have strong feelings about a law school graduate sporadically saying "lawyer" even without a bar license, so long as they don't take on duped clients. But "outside counsel" to the World Bank and "General Counsel" for a nonprofit are definitely false claims of being a licensed attorney.

BREAKING: A complaint has been filed with the California Bar against White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia, citing Popular Information’s reporting, for “the Unauthorized Practice of Law and for Holding Herself Out as Entitled to Practice Law.”

The Justice Department is threatening an antitrust lawsuit against the American Bar Association (which ED is trying to derecognize as an accreditor) over its requirement that most first-year law school classes be taught by full-time faculty. The handling attorney at DOJ is an adjunct at Catholic.

wsj.comExclusive | Justice Department Threatens Probe of American Bar Association on Law School RulesA top DOJ official says ABA unfairly restricts part-time law faculty, while echoing Trump administration concerns that the group takes liberal positions.

Assume Ms. Zacharia eventually passes the bar exam and seeks admission in DC. Can the admission authorities deny her based on her earlier misrepresentation of her qualifications?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: You said Zacharia is an attorney. Where did she pass the bar exam? What state? ZACHARIA: When I moved to China

Increasingly convinced that Schumer's social media is performance art.

That’s why Senate Democrats fought for enforceable safeguards holding ICE agents to the same standards as other law enforcement officers. DHS can make all the claims it wants. The footage will speak for itself. Release it.

@mbkplus.bsky.social and I are back to gawk at AI's impact on universities. AI is juicing scholarly outputs, standing in for provosts, receiving credit for discoveries, and "optimizing student and faculty workflows." Is this the new normal or a betrayal of the core mission?

I received a similar comment once about a paper on lawyers' careers. I wasn't offended so much as perplexed--shouldn't law professors care about what their students will be doing? Unprofessional is apt.

It would appear that a lot of very poor people are about to lose Obamacare coverage, in part because states didn't expand Medicaid after SCOTUS made it optional: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/22/h...
