“If it should turn out to be true that knowledge and thought have parted company, then we [will have] indeed become … thoughtless creatures at the mercy of every gadget which is technically possible, no matter how murderous it is.” Hannah Arendt, predicting the future in 1958

This is absolutely the wrong take on "Bad Apples" -- a must-see for anyone who is concerned with freedom, the individual and the state. (And/Or wants to see some stellar acting, not only by our Saoirse)

'One of the biggest challenges sexual assault survivors face is simultaneously navigating the university and the criminal justice system, which "serve different purposes, operate under different rules and timelines, and lead to different outcomes"' Absolutely true to my professional experience.

bbc.comCornell case spotlights 'confusing' web of systems for reporting campus assaultsVictims often have to navigate both university and local law enforcement processes to find justice.

Just helping with editing here. These bots aren’t sentient. They’re doing what they’re programmed to do. OpenAI, a private company supposedly bound by laws, committed federal crimes.

Here I am reading Arendt's "On Violence" while this is happening up the road. Thinking the book should be called "Violence versus Power" -- but the Irish edition would be "Violence, Power and the Rain".

The conversations described in this jury room sound familiar. Everyone is looking at the same evidence but one person reaches a completely different conclusion. Everyone has the same instructions-- “Don't convict if you have a reasonable doubt” -- but not everyone follows the instructions. [3 / 4]

It is indeed an “emotional rollercoaster”. At its core is that a person's fate (the defendant's) hangs on the ability of 12 people to exercise reason and follow instructions. The frequent failure of jurors to do so spells tragedy for the defendant and explains a lot about our politics. [4 / 4]

The experience taught me that there's nothing you can do to counter a convinced belief. Philosophers can appeal to reason; science to deduction; both to evidence. Neither work against a juror who shrugs their shoulders and says, “I just know they're guilty”. [2 / 4]

It's almost as if I had extensively researched and written about this once upon a time...

Doesn't regulating and fact-checking run contrary to the whole spirit of MAHA though? My understanding is that they've had enough of regulators (who let the opioid crisis happen) and experts (who pushed the drugs). I know and you know that this is a skewed view. But I doubt you'll persuade them.

Apparently people are sharing this far and wide on social media, which I think is horrible. This could cripple ICE operations. PLEASE do not share this.

We've reached a new level of "Things Were Better in the Old Days", and from a most unexpected source.

Farage has properly lost his touch. Old confident Farage would have known to play along with the Binface gag. New insecure Farage can't bring himself to do it. And that's why the headlines are about him staying away from the vote rather than the fact that he won it.

Over a quarter of #Clacton voters voted for a bin. 😂

Mark Chadbourn@chadbourn.bsky.social

A hugely embarrassing win for Farage in the Clacton by-election. Reform had been touting a 79% victory. Instead he got 63% against Count Binface who pulled in nearly 27%. Petulantly Farage didn’t turn up for the count to give a speech. The investigation into his finances begins again.

Seems a bit insulting to Count Binface but otherwise accurate. (And supported by @therestpolitics.bsky.social )

Otto English@ottoenglish.bsky.social

Whatever happens in Clacton tomorrow Farage is going to end up looking absolutely ridiculous He wanted to prove himself to be the hero of the hour, taking on and taking down the mythical "establishment". Instead he's going to look like an absolute clown - surrounded by clowns at a clown convention

"Pushing Iceland closer to Europe" Does that mean we have to re-draw our map? (✍️ @terriblemapshq.bsky.social )

The Economist@economist.com

For the European Union, the prospect of a new recruit on its north-western periphery would be welcome. But Iceland is divided over whether to restart talks to join the bloc. Register to read why

In Ireland, it's this kind of unintuitive thinking that gets housing wonks promoted.

Shelterforce@shelterforce.bsky.social

People who cannot afford housing do not stop needing it. They may become homeless, double up, couch-surf, or remain with family. Why is HUD studying ways to “moderate demand”? Read: bit.ly/4yOybzq #HousingPolicy #AffordableHousing #HUD

I'm sorry BlueSky. I know everyone is up in arms about John Cleese and today's right-wing atrocity. But I'm here for this madness instead.

Rep. Lauren Boebert insists that public Christian worship events are necessary for America to experience revival: "I don't think that Jesus ever called for any Christian to pray only silently or to keep their faith hidden only in the prayer closet."

I'll never understand a world where horror like this isn't all anyone can talk about.

Reuters@reuters.com

Security camera footage obtained from local businesses showed individuals who are believed to be U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers surrounding a car and pulling the driver onto the street, in events connected to the fatal shooting of a man in a coastal town in Maine on July 13.

Although I treat politics as "sports for nerds!" (to quote John Oliver), I am genuinely worried by R3f0rm. So is it too early to celebrate this as if my team had won the league title?

just now: farage will call a by election & stand for his seat again

....And an even worse idea if said clothing was made in China and you're trumpeting American exceptionalism.

derek guy@dieworkwear.bsky.social

Probably a bad idea to wrap your face and body in slim-fit clothing on a day with 101 degree heat. Especially if the garments are made from tightly woven cotton or certain synthetics.

A $3 @mta.info subway fare and some good Q train timing can buy you one hell of a view of the July 4th fireworks and the Brooklyn Bridge light show! Huge shoutout to the train operator for slow rolling over the Manhattan Bridge and the conductor for announcing it.
