A devastating and mysterious algal bloom that hit the coast of South Australia last year, killing more than 600 different kinds of marine life, inflicted such severe damage that a famed population of the giant Australian cuttlefish might not recover. Learn more: https://scim.ag/4rrVhbz

There seemed to be a lot of public panic (at least on X) over the recent simulation of a fruit fly being controlled by the virtual connectome - this was by far the funniest response

We calculated the effective size of the Scandinavian wolf population every year since its founding from the entire pedigree. Why? Because we could. But also because this population is vulnerable, and policy keeps pushing for lower and lower conservation targets 1/ #consgen

Lots of support, chocolates and hugs may be needed tomorrow. Look after your peers.

ARC says they'll announce outcomes of Future Fellowships (FT26) tomorrow (Tue 8 Sep). In recent times, these announcements have been around 11am Canberra time, though certainly with some variation. My bot will automatically post within a minute after the announcement.

The fallout from the collapse of this glacier - a torrent of mud surging down the valley - killed hundreds of people. Gone, in a flash. Those people were wiped out by anthropogenic climate change. Our governments are simply not responding quickly enough to this disaster which is already upon us.

An incredibly well-timed Landsat 9 pass captured the effects of yesterday’s catastrophic glacier collapse near the Nepal–Tibet border. The event was so massive that it was detected by seismometers around the world.

Tonight I dug this script out of my visualization archives from four years ago. Sadly, I had to further extend the y-axis scale as rapid warming continues, with a new record this year. No surprise to many experiencing the extreme summer heat... Data from GISTEMPv4: data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/faq/

I think the class of school administrators (not just in higher ed) who act fast to insulate core pedagogical functions from AI will reap major rewards for their trouble. In a few years, there will be an extremely stark difference between people who used AI in school and people who are competent

Some substantial changes announced by ARC for next (supposedly final) rounds of some schemes, esp. Discovery Projects👇 🔹CIs can only be on one DP28 app 🔹CIs on successful DP26 or DP27 apps cannot apply 🔹Rejoinder process “has been removed and replaced with more detailed feedback to applicants” ⁉️

This project was led by the very talented Aika Young and Jaxon Mitchell, before even starting their PhDs! Keep you eyes on both of them, as they are bound to be very successful.

Looming stimuli, rapidly expanding cues ⚫️ often elicit escape behavior. @puh23.bsky.social et al. show that hoverflies mostly respond to ventral looming stimuli matching neural data. It is still unclear whether the behavior aims escape or landing. journals.biologists.com/jeb/article/...

Difficult decisions take time, but can we keep all accumulated evidence in mind long enough to make better choices? We find that working-memory limitations constrain decision-making, and these effects are modulated by dopamine. biorxiv.org/content/10.6... bioRxiv out with Cina Aghamohammadi et al.

Yet numbers is what everyone measures

Opinion | True value of university research isn’t measured by numbers, says ARC CEO Professor Ute Roessner: www.afr.com/policy/healt... 'The Australia of tomorrow will be shaped by the ideas, people and partnerships we invest in today.

A major advice I try to pass on: science is only worth it if you can delight in the discoveries of others. It’s great to make your own discoveries but they are too few to sustain you over the long haul.
