The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

If you can vote early, vote early. If you can’t vote early, make a plan *now* on how you’re going to vote—and then a backup plan. Make your voting plan with friends. Don’t get caught out by trickery on the day.

There is no way fascists in the U.S. weren’t taking notes on the shit the fascists pulled in Brazil. If anything, they were using Brazil as a testing ground to see what caused the most disruption—if not for this November, then certainly in 2028.

In his talk at Princeton, @marcelias.bsky.social noted that the election suppression he worried about was less ICE at the polls and more ICE putting up traffic checkpoints and other things that made access to the polls much harder. And it looks like we’re seeing a version of that in Brazil.

The powerful executives who cozied up to Trump didn't oops accidentally forget about pendulum swings. They either: 1) Like the fascism 2) Calculated it was here to stay, so going along was savvy 3) Saw no real downside, no consequences when the pendulum swung Crucial to show them 3 was a mistake

That this is in THE WASHINGTON POST is almost too much irony to bear.

Given that everyone has fur that grows and sheds with the seasons, clothing stays similar through the year. Most people wear simple ponchos or tunics made from local fabrics, while wealthier people wear embroidered, imported fabrics and accessorise with cloaks and jewellery. #OctoberWorldbuilders

Good morning, #OctoberWorldbuilders! How's everyone today? This week's worldbuilder theme is aesthetics and vibes. Today's Q: What's the overall vibe of your world's clothing? What does it say about their culture or environment?

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Change is possible, despite what media messaging would have you believe - a better future is within our realisation, and it's a future without fascists or tech oligarchs.

If we lived in a Just world, the people who called the cops would have gotten a citation and a fine for abusing the system. Instead, this is the system.

They called the cops on this 3-year-old Black boy because he was kickin the white kids' ass on the soccer field.

None of us should forget this. Meta should be subjected to corporate death penalty and permanently broken up into small pieces.

So I don't want to oversell this but our 2024 EV percentage after day 2 was R+2.5. Right now it's D+17.7 So a 20 point swing in the largest suburban county in the country that had resisted some previous blue waves.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

between serbia, brazil, and hopefully november 3, a good reminder: voting works it’s not the end, there’s always work to be done after the vote, but if you want to beat the motherfuckers and keep them out of power: vote your asses off

Pyke Redrock reposted

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

Pyke Redrock reposted

May we not let the far-right twist the narrative about what happened today! It was a cleverly organised coup d’état attempt by the pro-Bolsonaro movement, meticulously engineered to work in their favour regardless of the results. Don’t fall for it.

The fact that Lula and his supporters were able to overcome so much interference by global autocrats and oligarchs and naked rigging on the day proves that fascism can be defeated with determined persistence, but you NEED to be determined and persistent.

This thread further evidences the universal truth about RW parties & fascism: if they have any reason to believe they might lose in an honest election, they’ll make the process of voting as broken as possible. The fight to protect democracy is global.

Congrats to Lula on overcoming Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump to defeat Hospital Pervert Jr., even as his opposition literally blocked off roads and turned off bus service during election day. Fascists are scary but they are always, 100% of the time, ultimately gigantic fucking losers.

If I'm ever unable to immediately cite three reasons why Kiddo is awesome without needing to lean on tech—any tech, not just AI—please put me in the ground, because I'd already be brain dead.

brazil is absolutely fighting for their lives against fascism right now. they got musk and zuck and other billionaire leeches against them, they got fascists mayors against them blocking the buses and changing up vote zoning and they are still fighting. they extended the vote-

Putin may have started the process of deep authoritarian meddling in democracies in the previous decades, but it’s now American fascists backed by American media and American tech who are behind the global democratic backslide.

Given how deeply Trump and American fascists have interfered in Brazil’s election, they’re likely not “getting ideas,” they’re straight-up A/B testing them.

Marian Call@mariancall.bsky.social

please please vote before election day, and tell your circles to. Republican mayors and governors are watching this unfold and getting ideas.

Rafa Sales Ross@rafiews.com

There is blatant voter suppression happening right now in Brazil: flights cancelled and buses suspended to Northeastern capitals where Lula holds the majority, polling stations changed to thousands of kms away last-minute, voters in London told they need to go to Edinburgh… This is criminal.

Anti-trans Democrats are spreading poison when we can least afford it, during elections in this ongoing fascist takeover. As a strategy, it’s a recipe for failure. As a moral stand, it’s reprehensible. PS I’m the father of young trans woman and I’ll never forgive anyone who makes her life harder.

there’s no such thing as “strategic bigotry.” I know this because there is no amount of money you could pay me to become a bigot. the democrats who do this agree to do it because they’re bigots

Erin Reed@erininthemorning.com

Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.
