I made it! And just got a message from the ferry company warning me that my journey back will include a special themed children's event, in case I want to change my booking. Maybe I'll travel in some sort of costume.

In Belfast. Should not be in Belfast. Went for a short run now that the storm has gone, and am about to head out to finally make it to TPAC.

This trip is the first time I've driven myself onto a car ferry. I thought I'd see what it was like. So far, not great in terms of getting anywhere. That said, everyone has been fairly jovial about the whole business, unlike people in airports, furious at the smallest inconvenience.

I'm on a boat! It's leaving the port. We've been told not to go on the outside decks. I'm going to stay in Belfast tonight, but I should make it to TPAC before lunch.

There's people vomiting in bins already. I'm not sure what I expected, but being on this ship is like being in an airline business lounge that keeps assuming a jaunty angle.

I've flown all over the world for work trips and never been late for anything. Decide to get a ferry to TPAC and end up trapped in a Scottish port. Current status is that I may be able to get on a delayed ferry this evening. Everyone is so friendly here though, there are worse places to get stuck.

I thought that getting a ferry from Scotland to Ireland for TPAC would be fun. I had not accounted for a BIG STORM. Ferry for Sunday has already been cancelled. Tomorrow I drive towards the storm, to sit in a hotel on the Scottish coast, hoping the rebooked ferry can sail.

I feel like this is just the beginning of a ridiculous story, where I'm repeatedly thwarted in my attempts to get on a boat. Luckily the CSS Working Group meetings are at the end of the week.

I've made it to the West Coast of Scotland in the hope I can get a ferry tomorrow. Am waiting out the storm in a hotel with a curling rink!

My way of dealing with the current state of things is with non-tech side projects. In the last couple of months I've taken on a part in the local pantomime and have started studying for genealogy qualifications. Anyone else doing side quests as coping mechanism?

I love this new thing where the tech industry is making English majors look SUPER IMPORTANT to a well-functioning company and society

Well done to the person in charge of Surface for doing a presentation where Surface wasn’t spelled correctly.

Better weather than expected today, have to make the most of it this time of year. Had lunch at Twice Brewed then walked along the lower path to Sycamore Gap and back. A lot of walkers out.

Using up some vacation days this week. I have lots of DIY and other jobs to do, but I found my pumpkin lights so started with the very important task of seasonal office decorations.

i especially love all the dopes saying “when the internet first went mainstream everyone hated it too” like it happened in the pioneer days so no one can dispute it, like mf’ers we were THERE

This is a lovely post. I'm quite often asked if people from different browsers argue with each other in CSS meetings. I usually say it's a lot more "huh... yeah that's not good ... how do we fix it?" That's especially true when it comes to the sort of situations described here.

Two of my cats have food bowls that only open when the bowl registers their microchip, to stop Pixel stealing food. Pixel has now developed the skill of sensing a cat approaching their bowl then sprinting over to jam his head in as it opens to snatch food.

Today Igalia turns 25. Ten engineers started it in A Coruña in 2001 with no investors and no managers. There are now close to 200 of us, and everything we build still goes upstream. igalia.com/2026/09/21/T...

My town had a music festival this weekend, which was lovely. Less lovely is that I got bitten on the eyelid by a midge while waiting outside the church to go into a gig and now look like I've been in a fight.

What’s the problem w using LLMs to write stuff you want other people to read -emails, articles, posts- and why are people (like me!) so incredibly hostile that they will block you/mute you/block your domain, to never read anything from you again? Bryan spells it out. Read it:

Saw three bats in my garden early this morning. My house being surrounded by bats is an excellent step towards my ultimate goal of "local witch". Has anyone used one of the bat detectors that plug into your phone?
