This was a fun chat with Mark Mattson, part walk down memory lane through my graduate and postdoc years, part deep-dive into the latest from our lab. Mitochondria are active power plants that generate energy near synapses, exactly when and where the brain needs them, to store memories.

How does the brain power its own memories β€” and what happens when that system fails? MPFI scientist Vidhya Rangaraju sat down with neuroscientist Mark Mattson on the Brain Ponderings podcast to explore exactly that. Listen on Spotify or watch on YouTube. 🎧️ buff.ly/v7N186U πŸ“ΉοΈ buff.ly/DDvrwpY

🧠 πŸ”‹ It was a delight to share our research on how memories are powered by mitochondria within synapses with PBS, along with Dr. Daphna Shohamy @zuckermanbrain.bsky.social and @paulkennyphd.bsky.social of @sinaibrain.bsky.social. Please check it out on @southfloridapbs.bsky.social PBS channels.

MPFI's @rangarajuvidhya.bsky.social recently joined neuroscientists from Columbia University and Mount Sinai for a town hall on memory, brain health, and cognitive aging, hosted by @southfloridapbs.bsky.social. πŸ§ πŸ”‹Boosting brain power and memory by increasing mitochondrial calcium ⚑πŸ§ͺπŸ”¬ This was a fun collaboration with Jaime (@jdejuan-sanz.bsky.social) and Anjali (@amrapalianjali.bsky.social). Thank you to Ruolin and Riya (@riyaneuro.bsky.social) in our lab @mpfneuro.bsky.social for driving this project.

Can we make brains β€œsmarter”? By boosting mitochondrial metabolism in neurons of memory circuits, we improved memory in flies and mice. Thrilled to see this work out - congrats to @amrapalianjali.bsky.social for spectacular work, and to all lab members for invaluable contributions!
