NEW: The DOGE operative who gutted USAID -- firing thousands of employees and canceling lifesaving programs -- never actually signed the paperwork that's legally required for him to be employed by the agency.

wired.comA 28-Year-Old DOGE Operative Gutted USAID. HR Had No Record of Him Working ThereDespite the agency's human resources department saying he hadn’t even been onboarded, Jeremy Lewin oversaw the destruction of USAID. It’s not clear he had the legal authority to do so.

So on the possible auction project... I didn't like the look of the Arlylian banner bag and I am gonna undo and maybe redo it. In the meantime, I am working on the Canamorra bag. And I decided to do it using Bayeux Tapestry stitches to make it seem older, which I haven't used before.

Well the Bayeux Stitch itself I haven't. But here is the look so far (very unfinished, no one judge!) Not sure anyone would want to buy it but I am enjoying the learning at least.

For two years, student-led protests have raged against Aleksandar Vučić and his corrupt government in Serbia. Today, in parliamentary elections, he was toppled. One of the most sustained protest movements in recent European history has succeeded. Resistance works.

West Virginia has been part of a nationwide push, partially funded by billionaire-backed political groups, to use taxpayer dollars to fund private schools. Among the proponents are the Koch family network and Pennsylvania billionaire Jeffrey Yass.

ive talked on how i wont engage with writers who use ai, i wont eat at a restaurant with an ai menu, i wont have anything to do with it. but what this post illustrates is regardless of how OTHERS react, ultimately the worst part about using ai is that you are punishing YOURSELF and dont even know it

It’s so weird to me to hear other women say “females” when talking about women I remember one woman said to me “Men and females” and I scrunched up my face so hard not even Botox could have fixed it

Saeed Jones@theferocity.bsky.social

Oh, it’s THEE litmus test for misogynoir and it works across genders. Another trusty test: people who say “females.”

The phishy bots and crappy editing/promo companies who use AI that fill author inboxes are apparently now targeting holiday and Xmas stories. I am getting tons of spam offers for... an Xmas fake dating short story I did like a decade ago that is an AU of a novel and which was free on old Smashwords

i've never stayed in an airbnb, partly because i have watched them destroy a local town but also paying to do chores??? hotels exist. so seeing them get rid of the chores rule is funny to me. still not gonna go to any because... hotels exist. but funny to see.

US garment workers helped pioneer multi-ethnic labor unions, which united people across racial, religious, gender, linguistic, and cultural divides. Also native-born citizens and immigrants. I think about that sometimes when I see people suggest such divides are unbridgeable.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

Also, I did (waste time cough cough) on a birthday story this year. And it was supposed to be an AU but upon finishing it... there really is no reason it couldn't be canon? hmm Anyway I think around my bday, I will post it to Patreon for free. But I will mention/link it in the newsletter. 🧡

Put my ballot in the drop box the other day and waiting for California to tell me it was counted. California can track ballots that well, but the DOJ is pretending they have a case. mmkay.

Co-signed! That’s what libraries are for, and they do pay us! Never apologize!

Tom Cox@dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social

Someone said to me, "I'm sorry but I got your book from a library." Nobody should ever apologise for that. You read my book! That's brilliant! I grew up hanging out in libraries and the idea of a world without them fills me with dread. Without libraries, authors, like readers, will only suffer.

Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

since California ballots are now out: prop 40 is the billionaire tax, and you should vote yes to stick it to them but both props 41 and 42 are designed to retroactively cancel the billionaire tax because they’re afraid they can’t beat it at the ballot box yes on 40, no on 41 and 42

Oh also IG (at least the desktop version) did not have a pumpkin, or a ghost, or any sort of Halloween emoji????? It had fall leaves and it had a Christmas tree, but no pumpkins or ghosties?
