«Algorithm» is named after the 9th-century Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi who «helped introduce algorithmic methods for solving mathematical problems, popularized the use of Hindu-Arabic numerals (including the concept of zero) in the West, and laid the groundwork for algebra».

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Lula: "We had to overcome foreign interference through digital platforms, which we will have to regulate. A crime in the digital world must be treated the same as a crime in the real world. We cannot have monstrous companies earning millions... not paying taxes... wanting to steer elections."

Bolsonaro's loss is not just a loss for Bolsonaro. It's a loss for Trump. For Musk. For Milei. For Netanyahu. For Farage. For Meta and Zuckerberg. For the meat barons, the fossil fuel corporations, and the rest of the neocolonial looters. And it is a massive win for humanity and the living planet.

The Lakota language does not contain nouns but it does contain the verb "wacan", meaning “to consciously apply mystery to everything”. In other words, the opposite of what we've been doing in the rest of the West since the Enlightenment. Time to wacan again.

After the Southport stabbings, imam Adam Kelwick took burgers and chips to a crowd outside his Liverpool mosque and ended up hugging one of them. Since then he’s taken protesters’ families and Muslim families on the same coach trips. Real connections between people beat hate.

The economist @isabellamweber.bsky.social says we must make life’s necessities affordable. Housing, transport, food, water, energy, healthcare: the stuff humanity depends on. “Fascism is rising from frustration, born out of a crisis of livelihoods. We need to reclaim these essentials now.”

Despite what certain hard right agitators claim, British Muslims and Christians work side by side on community projects like food banks. Why not you help your community by joining them?

Babies learn language through "joint attention": a live person tracking their gaze and responding to their babble. Infants pick up new language from human tutors but not from video of the exact same session. This is why AI may not transform education but great teaching will.

Sadio Mané is investing in the place that raised him. The ex-Liverpool forward has launched a $20m mango project in his hometown of Bambali, Senegal, expected to create 1,000+ jobs. He has already funded a school and hospital there. Better than spending it on cars and watches.

Green Party leader @zackpolanski.bsky.social grew up in a pro-Israel household. Then ex-soldiers from Breaking The Silence told him what they had done in the name of the IDF, and his views started to shift. Ask your MP if they’ve met Breaking The Silence. Ask the BBC’s Nick Robinson if he has.

Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez says he wishes today’s world leaders had even half the courage of Clara Campoamor. She won the vote for Spanish women in 1933, only to have to flee the country when the fascists took over.

The Booker Family's wealth was built on slavery and indentured labour. So when John Berger won the Booker Prize in 1972, he split the prize money with the British Black Panther movement.

By 2020, trust in Taiwan’s government had climbed to over 70%. How did they do it? vTaiwan, a virtual platform for citizens’ assemblies, allowed everyone to get involved in decision making and gamified the process of finding consensus.

St Helena, California has an outright ban on chain retail. No Starbucks, no formula restaurants, no cookie-cutter brands on Main Street. The town decided a monopoly on charm was worth more than convenience. Would your town be improved by a policy like this?

Dear Brazilians, please don't vote for the destruction of the Amazon and therefore of human civilization. ------------- Caros brasileiros, por favor, não votem na destruição da Amazônia e, consequentemente, da civilização humana.

It's most important policy set by @greenparty.org.uk conference. While Labour suggest stocking up on tins, the Greens would start a national Strategic Food Reserve - like all sensible governments (Switzerland has enough to feed the nation for months).

12,000 volunteers in Berlin now help water the city's trees, using an open-source map that shows which of 900,000+ are thirsty. Potsdam, Leipzig, Magdeburg and a Paris arrondissement have copied the code. The city can't keep up, so neighbours step in and make friends along the way.

If you join @greenparty.org.uk, you can propose a new policy. If enough members support your motion, it will be debated at conference. If conference votes for it, it becomes Green Party policy. It's not a perfect system but it's democratic, unlike other political parties.

Words or deeds? "We hear you, you were right" said Ed Miliband to those outraged by the plight of the Palestinian people. As he spoke, many of those people were being arrested outside for supporting Palestine Action. 🤔 @zackpolanski.bsky.social would withdraw the ban on Palestine Action. ✅

On this day in 1962, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was published, kickstarting the modern environmental movement and enraging polluters. It eventually led to the pesticide DDT being banned and to Richard Nixon’s creation of the Environment Protection Agency which lasted until Trump destroyed it.

The privatization of water, rail and energy firms has cost the British public dearly. @greenparty.org.uk would bring these utilities back into public hands. Essential services run for people rather than shareholders. It used to be normal; it can be again.

Margaret Thatcher's Right to Buy scheme saw over two million council homes leak into the private sector. Scotland and Wales have already put a stop to this. @greenparty.org.uk would do the same in England, as well as building 150,000 new social homes a year.

The word "scientist" was coined in 1834 to describe Mary Somerville. As a woman, she was denied schooling so taught herself algebra by candlelight. Cambridge taught from her books before women were allowed to attend. Later, Oxford named a women’s college after her.

Pakistan kicked their fossil fuel addiction, building the fastest solar revolution on Earth and so avoided the worst impacts from the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Time for Europe to learn from Pakistan.
