This isn’t just “winter weight.” This tiger is excessively overweight. And he’s clearly lost weight from his highest point - the primordial pouch is not supposed to extend under the chest. Unfortunately this is a really unhealthy and unethical weight for this cat to be at. I wish it was cute…

Some #Caturday Science!🧪 This is Miko the Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) from GarLyn Zoo Wildlife Park (non-AZA accredited, in Michigan's UP). Miko is showing his winter weight, but you're also seeing a PRIMORDIAL POUCH swinging under his tummy. Let's talk about these pendulous paunches.

Haven't been outside yet to look at the repaved street, but I asked the bird who's always chirping in the tree next to my window how it looked. He said it looks cheap.

Just got word an amazing contract is going away in the new year because google’s pivot to AI has nerfed the organization’s income. Anyone need a professional fact-checker for, well, anything? Looking to fill gaps in availability at the end of the year and over the holidays.

It's #fossilfriday! Here's a guy from HOW TO SURVIVE PREHISTORY: Arthropleura, a (probably!) herbivorous millipede relative that roams the coal forests of Carboniferous Scotland. Survival Verdict: YES. It's got a nasty nip, but we feel if you get bit, you have it coming.

this takes an incredible amount of character, not just to give it up, but to admit all of this. This guy has more guts than any AI fuck by a mile, and maybe more than us too. People who've managed to escape AI usage are invaluable towards convincing others to do the same.

Brett Codes@brettcodes.bsky.social

I wrote an essay about why I'm done using AI for coding, even if it costs me my job and career: brettcodes.com/im-done-usin... The basic gist is: AI made me a worse, apathetic programmer. I think it's bad for humanity, the planet, and the craft of software engineering. And I'm done using it.

You know jokes about "having the braincell"? Well, having read the Clocktaur wars, Swordheart, & about half of Daggerbound I'm pretty sure @tkingfisher.com gives the party braincell to the gnole ...cause the humans are high int, low wis, and dense as hell

Uber eats refused to refund my food that arrived thoroughly contaminated with air freshener - inedible - and hung up on me when I asked for an explanation of that policy. Now I have no food, no refund, and no spoons to go get something myself since I can’t risk that guy picking up another order.

I’m used to jangling my entire brachioplexus when I sneeze too hard, because hypermobility. Today’s new horror is somehow pissing off both femoral nerves simultaneously. It’s like hitting your funnybone… the entire length of the nerve. Why, meatsuit, why?

Fact-checking (by @rhgarner.bsky.social) saved my ass on this, in terms of the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste disposal site, "this place is not a place of honor," you know it. Games and games of telephone across reputable publications!

If you’re tempted by the “AI summaries are just modern CliffsNotes” argument, please remember that CliffsNotes were written and edited by people who got paid to be accurate, not built on stolen data and extruded through a LLM that doesn’t know what truth is.

I was in one of these recently and it was no big deal. I'm still a closed loop individual of individual sapience. There's definitely no humming of the collective mycelium spirit in the back of my mind. Don't worry about these

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

@erinbiba.bsky.social sorry to tag you directly - are you taking book manuscript FCs at this time? If yes, I occasionally need to pass on work when I’m low on availability & try to suggest other fact-checkers. I would love to point them your way, but I’m not sure how to put them in contact with you.

For Aftermath's Hater Week, I wrote about how Google's conversational AI search results aren't just annoying, but are an offense to everything I hold dear about the process of information searching in the first place

You suddenly get a narrator describing your life and there’s no way to turn it off - everyone can hear it. While shopping, at work, at home, with friends - the voice narrating your every move goes on. Who do you hope is the voice of this narrator?

Hey Seattle and SnoCo folk, bad air is rolling in from the east. East side of the state is already red and purple on the air quality maps. Good time to shut your windows.

Life advice for the ages. Those doing wrong want you tired and hopeless. But stay angry. And when a chance is in front of you: bite back. Digital plans for a real linocut. I'm anxiously awaiting a press to make this stuff possible with my RSI in my hands. #art #tiger #resist #linocut

Hyper-mobility problems: sneezed wrong yesterday while doing chores that took a lot of shoulder extension, now half of my ribcage is screaming. Now to go lace into a historically accurate corset to approximate the ribs heads in the hope the aggravation will calm down and I can function today…

I did a tonne of research so you don't have to. I talk about masking, air filtration, and air quality rating systems, & I give concrete suggestions to help you keep yourself and your loved ones safe. If you don't have this information yet, it's time to get educated. Wildfires don't respect borders.

I’m looking forward to reading this.

New commentary at @natrevpsychol.nature.com with Alexis Palmer, @natematias.bsky.social, and @mjcrockett.bsky.social: Proprietary LLMs impede scientific transparency and reproducibility. 🧵👇 doi.org/10.1038/s441...

Wildfire smoke clogs filters quickly /and/ N95s. It messes with the charge in meltblown filters as well as just being a physical blockage. If you’re using a mask outside in the smoke, replace it probably daily - and if you’re masking indoors for health reasons, have a separate mask for it.

Geoffrey Cubbage@geoffreycubbage.bsky.social

Update: well that’s wild y’all. Filter on top is a clean, unused one fresh out of its packaging. Filter on bottom was the same when I installed it yesterday evening; this is what it looks like after roughly 24 hours of HVAC in Chicago’s blanket of wildfire smoke.

A year or two I put forward questions about if zoos/sanctuaries had contingency plans for staff and animal health in heavy smoke or other respiratory hazard events like nearby teargas deployment. I was not taken seriously. I wonder what’s happening with animal welfare now in the midwest?

It's not enough to be against AI, you need to be pro art. You need to be a champion of the art you love, you need to share that passion and joy, and do what you can to support the artists who make it, because it's not enough to hate AI, to hate what it's doing to art and media; you gotta love.

This NOT a case of a tourist being stupid and getting the consequences. The article makes that absolutely clear, but people are still saying FAFO. No. Stop it.
