BBC News just interrupted its coverage to go, live, to Nigel Farage - a man with no contitutional standing in our setup - responding to the budget - a document which nobody has seen yet. WHY

Supporters of Serbia's student-backed protest movement celebrate in the streets of Belgrade as veteran leader Aleksandar Vucic concedes defeat for his ruling party in snap elections. The vote is the culmination of nearly two years of student-led protests

What a day for democracy! Never ever let them tell you, you have no voice. This student led victory is absolutley astonishing in Serbia.

Caroline Dodds Pennock@carolinepennock.bsky.social

Everybody is talking about Lula, but actually the victory in Serbia of a student-led, anti-government group fronting candidates from across society is almost more interesting for what it says about the potential to genuinely transform politics with the right movement at the right moment.

I was having conversations with journalists just a few months ago about whether democracy was doomed. Look at this year: Orban defeated. Vukic defeated. Bolsonaro Jr defeated. Trump heading to likely defeat in midterms. That’s the beauty of democracy. Voters can respond. Don’t count it out yet.

The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated. In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

Despite orders for polls to remain open for an extra two hours, results are already coming in, including from states with the strongest evidence of voter suppression, like Bahia. This will be a long night. What is happening is an unprecedented crime against democracy in Brazil.

In a crowded field of bad chancellors, mostly occupied by Tories, he was probably the second worst chancellor of the last three decades. Kwarteng will always take top spot.

Extraordinary that he has the nerve to offer his opinions on economic policy. Even more extraordinary that he’s still given space in the media to express them. Next up, David Cameron explaining how to win a referendum ?

Watching him carefully but deliberately wade into this issue is very encouraging. For over a decade, political leaders have not dared to break the consensus on free movement and without that there can be no meaningful improvement in European relations.

Lush autumn walk to our fave place on the doorstep Insole Court, so nice to get out after the rain to see the Autumn fair stalls in my new coat which apparently is very mafia wife. I love it.

Last night I watched #TheWargame from start to finish. I’m amazed more people aren’t talking about it. Perhaps the subject feels too alarming, but for me it is a must watch. Politics aside the programme shows how fast events could escalate to nuclear war, something I've been on about for years☢️ xx

Very topical and fascinating COBRA war cabinet drama with Gove acting as PM. Only just now catching up with this - what a cabinet of ministers this is.

It's going to take a long time to reformat the way industry bodies and commentators approach politics. They don't yet seem to have clocked just how fundamentally devolution is going to change things.

some of the hysteria here seems to ignore the fact that this is *optional*? if it looks like it will damage local tourism, mayors can just... not do it! they can change their minds!

Haha or maybe not "After his death in 1960, one MI5 officer called the content of the file "remarkably tame". Brilliant

This whole concept of voting off or the killing of the most interesting characters in this years #Celebritytraitorsuk means we are in danger of a very boring cast left in the castle. I will still watch it mainly for Claudia and her exquisite wardrobe choices but last years was a lot to live up to.

It doesn't matter what your view of Brexit is. Even if the interference proved decisive, it wouldn't take away from the fact that millions of Brits felt discontented enough to demand change. But to close your ears to it is to prioritise your ideology over your sense of national responsibility.

Rhid83 reposted

Also obvious and often forgotten: underlying maths here changed. A lot of people still analyse politics of Brexit as if the split in the public is still 52/48, with leave both an overall majority and more efficiently spread, with most seats majority Leave. None of that true now

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social

When I say the politics will become increasingly obvious... I mean look at this. If you want to unite the left/centre and split the Tories, without a big spending committment there's no better option.
