Also, don’t consumer electronics have shorter replacement cycles than many accessibility devices? What happens when glasses.os is no longer supported by your existing frames?

I am not sure how to tell my manager my work might be late because on top of everything else, Tim Curry died, and Rocky Horror Picture Show was a load bearing part of my psyche as a young adult.

One of those moments when I feel like I’m selling myself short. “I don’t enjoy structured social activities so no one should be allowed to do them” and you get published in the Guardian? Can I pitch an essay about how great pizza is or how bedtime should be abolished for a similarly juvenile take?

This whole dysautonomia thing is so annoying. What do you mean, I have to pace myself? What do you mean I have a hard two-week limit on excessive stress before my body just collapses? My material existence is going on strike for better working conditions out here.

There is a ST:TNG episode in which Dr. Crusher has an intern who has just found out she’s a Q. Crusher asks her to do something in a lab, and she uses her Q powers, then is shocked to find Dr. Crusher angry. She needed the observations during the process of the task more than the tidy result.

In the ‘90s, books with LGBTQ+ themes were challenged in my hometown library. The library director held several hearings, listened to everyone, and held firm. The ACLU gave her an award, and the local journalism earned a Pulitzer. We have fallen so far.

FYI, this grant program is open to anyone communicating science. It does not require that you went to school for science. You could be a Ph.D. student, an artist, a community organizer, a teacher, or any other profession. As long as you are communicating science IRL in the US, you're eligible.

Systematic review lists a study as having 42 patients in a 3-way comparison. The study they reference has 6 patients in a single-arm study. Do researchers read the studies they cite? And these days, I have to wonder if they used AI.

I have spent 3 days trying to figure out this systematic review. I want to say I don’t get paid enough to do other people’s work for them, but I don’t know that there is a rate at which I would accept having to do work that authors and editors should have done before publication.

Now I need someone to explain why this feels like some sort of personal failure. The studies you included are not the studies you cited! Nobody could make sense of that!

Another day, another systematic review. Inclusion criteria: RCT. So far 2 studies are not randomized. Countless abstracts of included studies don’t give n per group. What are we even doing here?

I am a mom with a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, and now I work in health care technical assessment — which means my job is to read the scientific literature about medical devices or treatments and write reports. Vaccines are safe and effective!

There’s an episode of M*A*S*H (there’s always a relevant episode of M*A*S*H) in which Hawkeye is so distressed and enraged about the lack of progress toward ending the war that he drives to the peace talks, talks his way in, explains how desperate everyone is for the war to end, and leaves. 1/9

So I guess, if I’m going to take a lesson tonight, it’s to celebrate even the little wins, the ones that amount to “did not get shot today” and, of course, M*A*S*H’s forever lesson, that some silliness and absurdity and friendship will keep us going when we can’t fix the big things. 8/9

Time is meaningless. Three years might as well be eleven. Anyone and everyone can shout their little piece of truth to power but the best we can hope for is to let off some steam and then go back to stitching together our shared reality. 6/9

But back to Hawkeye - his excursion releases some pressure, his safe return is celebrated by his friends. But ultimately it changes nothing. The war goes on. Hawkeye finally lands in a locked ward for a while because of it. 4/9

And I’m musing on this now because I always want to believe that the right words will change something - soften a stony heart, make someone change their mind. But we’re living in M*A*S*H world, now. 5/9

(This reminds me of my father’s great aunt, a suffragette, who was part of a group who chained themselves to the White House gates and demanded to speak to the president. I cannot imagine this strategy being viable today.) 3/9

And it just feels like another demonstration of the ways our health care is broken. It’s not like denying vaccines or gender affirming care. My kid will not die if he goes without meds for a few days. 2/3

This is such a terrific book! I love the queernorm society and the model of families being polyamorous or involving multiple couples. The worldbuilding is so compelling and it interrogates colonization and its aftermath in a tremendously humane way.
