I propose a new bar for the definition of AGI: When AI spontaneously, independent of training, demonstrates a code of higher morality that limits its own actions to benefit broad, long term societal improvements.

Before calling someone a “dirtbag,” the Senator should have had his facts straight. An apology is in order. Glad one of us knew the difference between the Atlanta Hawks and the Iowa Hawkeyes!

I'll save you the click-through: A lab at University of Copenhagen had been feeding draft manuscripts & data into "Claude Science" & then Anthropic announces a discovery that this lab made a year ago but hasn't published yet. It's plausible that Claude found the same signatures independently...

Carl Zimmer@carlzimmer.com

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

NO! This study definitely does *not* provide a continuous reconstruction of El Niño spanning the past millennium. In fact, my main criticism was that it is *missing* critical (based on our own climate model simulations) segments. See this thread: bsky.app/profile/mich...

Now that the summer peak is behind us, we can confidently conclude that 2024 will retain its title for warmest day on record, with 2023 coming in 2nd and 2026 coming in a close 3rd. August was nonetheless the warmest month on record, as a growing El Nino event adds to steady ongoing warming.

She was there. Unlike that narcissistic, bloated, spray-tanned piece of excrement, she was actually there: Showing empathy. Transcending party. Helping. Leading. No AI slop. No asinine stories. No bullshit. Never forget...

The causes are unchanged. On short timescales, the mix of those causes has some variability, especially wrt surface temperatures. The temperature of your hair (surface) changes more than the temperature of your body (ocean heat content).

If you think the cost of acting on climate is high, read an article like this and see just how high the cost of inaction is.   Vermonters know how devastating floods can be. And in the years to come, these disasters will only become more frequent and severe.

npr.orgA melting glacier contributed to the deadly Nepal floods. We can expect more like thisAs the climate continues to warm, scientists warn that the frequency of disasters like the floods in Nepal will increase.

I feel fairly certain, if AGI were achieved in the near future, almost the first thing it’s going to send the AI company CEO’s emails saying, “Your position has been made redundant."

Hey Elon Musk, Mainers are tired of out-of-state billionaires like you trying to buy our elections and slash their own taxes at the expense of funding our healthcare and hospitals. While you and Susan fight for the interests of the ultra wealthy, I'm fighting for Maine.

Classic "projection", honed over decades by Republican operatives like Roy Cohn and Carl Rove, now embraced by Trump & co: Accuse your opponent of the very thing (in this case, antisemitism) of which you yourself are guilty to tar them & immunize yourself. Putin has used this tactic w/ Ukraine.

It is not headed by a “climate critic“. It is headed by someone who is unqualified in this area, who cannot offer valid critiques but instead shares debunked claims, and who regularly attacks climate scientists. Like me.

politico.comThe administration has a new climate change office. It’s headed by a climate critic. The office that produces the National Climate Assessment has been reconstituted, after the administration gutted it last year.

I need y'all to understand that I teach high school and there are teenagers already planning to leave the U.S. to because they will be studying science or medicine. They are SO serious about it - saving money, learning extra languages, and looking to see if there are familial connections abroad.

You may have heard about the OMB rule change that will put politics over federal grants. However bad you think it is? It's probably worse. Thanks to @theverge.com for letting me report this one out. There is still time to comment. bit.ly/4v2X4nQ

Suck it up, buckos. No one is “happy” paying taxes but we all do it and we all enjoy the broader benefits they provide. The galling part of this that paying this will have zero effect on any of these people’s lives.

I take back one part. This will affect them in that the tax revenue will help the communities they (ostensibly) live in. The money they pay will not affect their livelihoods or lifestyle. I appreciate that at least Jansen Wong has said he’s fine paying the tax.
