Urbanism of Thessaloniki ✨
Somewhat fascinating to see people here are not just completely giving up on walkability and accessibility, they're also pretty much giving up on parks by dedicating large squares in dense residential neighborhoods (with good transit!) entirely to parking
The White House Military Office Marine Corps aide was on “Football” duty tonight for Trump’s latest trip to Mar-a-Lago—his private home/club. The ~45-pound satchel accompanies Trump 24/7, enabling him to authorize the use of any of our ~1,770 deployed nuclear weapons—up to 900 on alert—at any time.
It’s hard to explain to people that republicans think that disabled children subsisting on sub-poverty level benefits need to have a lower standard of living so a billionaire can get another yacht because it sounds too cartoonishly evil.
Amidst the tumult, Congressional Rs are working on a budget bill to deliver huge tax cuts to the wealthy & corporations, cut benefits from people who need them, & massively increase deficits & debt.
One of the proposed cuts is to low-income disabled kids:

Elon Musk just called Social Security a Ponzi scheme, so it’s worth reiterating: All functional retirement schemes, public or private, pre funded or pay as you go, are claims on future production - there's just no way, at scale, of storing current production for use during retirement
Kind of crazy that a shared Uber is cheaper than Amtrak capital corridor, and capital corridor doesn’t break even on fair revenue. What’s that about? Is it just that there’s a bunch of empty trains at low demand times?
The phenomenon of “leftist language policing” is 99% a product of centrists whining about it constantly. I almost never encounter it in real life and requests for vocabulary updates are typically non-binding guidelines for formal written documents.
Regular reminder that this entirely comes down to retirements. I think it's good that old people are able to stop working, and that we have payroll-tax-paying-aged people coming here from around the world to keep things going
The Jetsons, an influential cartoon television series of the 1960s “Sputnik” era, imagined we’d all have flying cars and therefore live on the tops of towers. It was the perfect sprawl futurism, in which technology finally triumphs in its long struggle to make walking impossible.
The same agencies that are ok putting paint-only bike lanes on 50mph arterials also insist that Neighborhood Electric Vehicles must be banned from streets over 35mph for safety reasons.
It would be nice if we just admitted the regulations exist to game the market, not for safety.
What’s a little bigger than a bike, a lot smaller than a car, and might be the tool you didn’t know you needed to get a big haul home from the grocery store two miles away in the pouring rain?
Before electricity made its debut, steam trains would rattle down Berkeley's Shattuck Ave!
Instated in 1875, Central Pacific locomotives operated Local trains between Berryman (Vine St) and the Oakland Pier. Often raining soot/ash over the city, residents were glad to see them go in 1911.

Point access blocks are better for family-sized apts, but you also get better small units than double-loaded corridors. Good look finding a newly built 25-sq. m. (269-sq. ft.) 1BR in N. America with two exposures and three windows. Here, enjoy your studio, 2x the size (price adjusted accordingly)
Winter observations of Berkeley Rent Board data. Reported volume and price remains low for regulated apartments. However I wish to note that January, for whatever reason, historically does not have timely reports. Last year the January estimate didn't firm up until July. Consider these preliminary.
Everyone said building a walkable neighborhood in a car-centric city like Phoenix was impossible.
It isn't impossible.
Culdesac Tempe is showing that new walkable neighborhoods thrive in the U.S.!
I am strongly in favor of this change. Over 15 years ago, 5-year old Zachary was killed at this intersection. We have known for years that this is dangerous, and it's past time that we do something about it. Thank you for your leadership on pedestrian safety, @markhumbert.bsky.social.
One car in 10 stops at the slip right turn at Zachary’s Corner. This intersection will be redesigned and reconstructed with funds from Berkeley’s LRDP settlement with UC Berkeley, per my request. It’s a top priority project for our Public Works Dept. Can’t happen soon enough.
Having two sets of wings is clearly safer than having one set of wings.
We should never let aviation in North America evolve past this point (even if the rest of the world is flying around in jets).
Despite the many obstacles to riding a bicycle in our cities, people still do it. An absolutely incredible testament to the efficiency and joy of this simple and beautiful movement.
Two local developers successfully protested the $120K in "impact fees" the city charged them for a Temescal condo project.
In their appeal, the builders cited a recent Supreme Court case — which could upend a primary way Oakland funds affordable housing.
