Well, look at that. California is seeing a big increase in multifamily housing permits. We passed historic CEQA reforms w/AB 130 to make it easier to build housing & now we’re seeing momentum. There’s still lots of work to do, but this is an encouraging sign. www.ocregister.com/2026/10/08/c...

I'm asking everyone reading this to dig deep and find a couple hours to volunteer for @valencia4actransit.bsky.social and/or to donate to her campaign. She is an incredible candidate, but it's challenging to win against an incumbent. Please join me in helping her win. www.valenciaforactransit.com

The Green Party endorsements make me look pretty good! Sadly they recommend voting against me. Odd that a party calling itself "green" opposes actual urban environmentalism like walkable neighborhoods. Luckily, their track record of backing losing candidates leaves me feeling optimistic! 🌱🙃

Updated this chart for 2026: property taxes paid by year parcel developed in Berkeley, California. Buildings from this decade pay more taxes than everything Berkeley built in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s combined. Note: Tax data is current but building data ends in 2025.

Ross Bernet reposted

91% of Berkeley property tax bills increased slower then inflation from 2025-2026 to 2026-2027. The median percentage increase was 1.6%. This is why we have to keep adding tax line items.

Want to get less mail, texts, and calls? Vote early! Once a ballot is received, you get marked off as Already Voted in the voter file that many campaigns use, and they'll stop contacting you.

“There’s strong evidence that bike lanes are good for local businesses, and my guess is that a year after installation, most people won’t even remember why this was such a big fight,” Bernet said. That’s right. Let’s go 💪🚲

Thank you to the amazing volunteers who have come out to knock doors for me - some week after week! It is truly humbling. In the face of so many big challenges at all levels of government, we are fortunate to get to participate in democracy to make our values known and fight for a better future 🙏

Hmmm. Almost like….building apartments….helps lower rent??!

Jeff Baker@jwbee.bsky.social

Rents for new leases of regulated 1-bed and studio apartments in Berkeley ticked down a bit in September '26, sequentially and annually, to a median $2098/month. That is the lowest of any September in a decade. Even in nominal dollars, that's lower than 2019.

Californians: you're going to hear about the Starter Home Revitalization Act a lot over the next few years. In short, it legalizes small-lot infill ownership homes (ie townhomes and cottage courts) by-right everywhere housing is allowed, with strict approval deadlines similar to those for ADUs.

California YIMBY@cayimby.bsky.social

[Bill Alert] @governor.ca.gov has signed SB 1116. It will streamline the construction of smaller, lower-cost “starter” homes for homeownership by making several improvements to existing state housing law. Thank you, Sen. Caballero. cayimby.org/legislation/...

Thank you for all your work Emilie! Local news is essential for a functional democracy.

The Berkeley Scanner@berkeleyscanner.com

Four years ago today, I launched The Berkeley Scanner. Since then, I've been in the crosshairs of a high-profile politician, expanded City Hall coverage and launched a second site, Albany Scanner. I've now covered Berkeley news for 14 years. So grateful for all the support and excited for year five!

Supply and demand….does apply to housing??!!? 🤔🤔🤔

Sam Greenberg@samjgreenberg.com

The WSJ is complaining that rents are low in Portland due to an “oversupply of new housing.” 😈 www.wsj.com/real-estate/...

I’m running for City Council to get back to the basics:  • Pave our roads • Safe infrastructure • Tackle the deferred maintenance backlog • Deliver safety upgrades for everyone  Decades of neglect left us with a $250M+ pavement backlog. Let’s build safe, smooth streets across Berkeley! 🚴 🚦 🚗

Thank you for publishing this @berkeleyscanner.com Read about all five candidates here:

Five people are vying for the District 1 seat on the Berkeley City Council in November. We asked them why they're running, what they see as the biggest challenges and what they hope to accomplish.

Couldn’t have said it better myself! Thanks for your leadership @adenaishii.bsky.social ! “Doing Business in Berkeley” is exactly the talk title I am most excited to hear about right now. Let’s increase our tax base so we can support all the other amazing things we want to do 💪

I meet too many people who complain that transit needs to be better in Berkeley. We have negligent AC transit directors abdicating their responsibility rather than focusing on their jobs. It’s no wonder it’s not better. Make sure to vote @valencia4actransit.bsky.social And thank Jean Walsh!

Jean Walsh@therealjeanwalsh.bsky.social

Heads up, tonight‘s board meeting has been canceled for lack of quorum. This is the first time this has happened in my 6 years on the board. 2 board members were calling in from Europe, one member planned to call in for safety reasons, and Young was planning to be absent.

*Day FIVE* of the IMMENSELY valuable parking directly in front of Monterey Market continues to serve as a used car sales lot. Where is the outrage from the folks so worried about loss of parking from bike lanes??

Ross Bernet@rosszb.bsky.social

*Day three* of taking up a parking space on Hopkins that would much better serve the entire community as a protected bike lane rather than a used car sales lot!

NW Berkeley home prices hit $1.5M this summer - that makes ownership impossible for most regular people. Berkeley has done a good job building rental apartments, but we need more paths to ownership. Condos, missing middle housing & single-stair reform will help bring young families to Berkeley.

To build more affordable ownership options, we need faster permitting, pre-approved plans & more ADU, among other policies. Check out video 2 of 3 from my shoot with @brandonyung.bsky.social! 🙏 Stay tuned for the final installment, and huge thanks to Brandon for all the work on this series! 🎥

Reporting from Berkeley on why repaving must include street safety upgrades! After Rose St was repaved, speeds jumped 5mph—increasing collision risk. Thanks to 2024’s Measure FF, we have funds for speed bumps & traffic calming to reach our Vision Zero goals. 📹: @brandonyung.bsky.social 🙏

Jean Walsh is the real deal! She leads with enthusiasm, principles, and strategic vision, never settling for status quo public transit in Alameda County. Plus, her car-free happy hours are a monthly treat! I'm honored to have her endorsement and support out door knocking with me! 🚌🚏❤️💪

I am deeply honored to receive the endorsement of California State Assemblymember @buffywicks.bsky.social As a dedicated champion for housing, Assemblymember Wicks continues to lead the charge on making housing more abundant and affordable across our state. Grateful for her leadership 🙏

I am incredibly disappointed & frustrated that AB 1903, my bill to reform construction defect liability, just died in the Senate. Critical components were amended out Friday & it was ultimately held by the Senate late last night — missing the midnight deadline for concurrence.

I know we're all tee-hee-heeing over Trump's deranged, attempted renaming spree, but all I can feel is this gnawing nausea This behavior is 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘦, and our oligarch-controlled media are all but incapable of saying it If any Dem president had done this, they'd have been impeached by dinner

btw what inspired this post was a bike trip to berkeley bowl west and finally noting a duplex being built on ninth. looking it up now it was proposed as soon as missing middle zoning kicked in (13th of nov 25), approved within two weeks, and it's already at framing. that's what i like to see!

i manually track new housing developments in berkeley & a Good Problem that has emerged is i'm noticing missing middle housing cropping up on my journeys that are too small to be worth the effort to track but are undoubtedly gonna make up an increasing share of projects actually underway.

I get that rebalancing street design away from car dominance is inconvenient to those whose lifestyle is fully oriented around driving. But personal passenger vehicles are the No 1 source of GHG emissions in CA. Taking action to address this isn't "environmentalism gone awry", it's a core component.

I wasn’t sure if the compostable bags could be put in the green bin in Berkeley. And the answer is yes! (Sadly not in Oakland, curiously) resource.stopwaste.org/curbside/ber...

Well, bad news about those compostable bags made of bio plastic. StopWaste says don’t put them in the compost bin. share.google/hDNnrI1vMJSS...

fellas Car-Free Telegraph is officially listed in Alameda County Transportation Commission's draft Countywide Transportation Plan with an estimated price tag of $30m. this is a seal of legitimacy-- our county transportation funding agency and the city see it as a top priority! we will deliver this

Sam Greenberg@samjgreenberg.com

SO remember car-free Telegraph? berkeley city council just approved $1.3 million for design and engineering last night!! enormous thank you to @adenaishii.bsky.social for including this in her budget and @cecilialunaparra.bsky.social and @telegraphforpeople.bsky.social for carrying this forward 🥹🥹
