NY’s 21st congressional district is in play? I grew up there; it’s as red as any place in the US. The klan did an outreach effort there when I was high school. That there’s even a chance a Dem could win that seat is shocking.

The nice this about IPOs is they shine a little light on the financial workings of a company. Anthropic’s filing is eye-opening. It is clear that ai won’t be nearly as “cheap” as it is now once companies need to stop burning through VC money to subsidize market penetration.

I am not at surprised, meanwhile, that the NYT article about this filing mentioned only “explosive year over year growth.” The only mention of loss is this year’s $80 billion, which the Times quickly caveats in the same sentence as merely an accounting move (which while true misses the point).

The rocket company owned by the fascist can at least pretend it has a path to its valuation making sense even though we all know said fascist is pretty reliably full of shit. I legit don’t understand why investment analysts are not screaming about bad business models here.

Just saw Wildwood. One of the most heartbreakingly beautiful movies I’ve seen in years. The story would shine on its own, but in combination with the breathtaking hand animation it is truly a masterpiece.

making games so you can hopefully afford to make more games is literally a different industry from grinding up people so number goes up and it is harmful to pretend otherwise regardless of whether or not we share a platform or a binary format

Go see Wildwood. Seriously, don’t wait—go see Wildwood. What a piece of art. The love for the manual craft, for story that doesn’t hold back, for filmmaking that is not here to answer to stockholders, it weaves all through it. Incredible stuff.

Our entry for the “Alameda Haunts” house decorating contest is “The Next Martha’s Vineyard And Definitely Not Cursed.” It’s a fundraiser for alamedafoodbank.org and this year there’s a people’s choice award, so vote for entry 26 if you like it (and please consider a donation). #widowsbay

Meanwhile, the Democratic governor of California decided that throwing trans people under the bus is the way to win.

BeshearStan@beshearstan.bsky.social

Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights: “I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”

I need more people to see Wildwood. Not only is it stunning, there is zero chance of risky, original animation coming in the future if films like it don’t make enough money. I wish it weren’t the case but it’s the reality of where things are.

Been in a crap mood like I have? Read this thread and the quote posts. For me I’ll say the acceptance of gender non-conformity in teenage culture. I know it’s still shit but one of my AMAB high school classmates was physically assaulted just for wearing a dress to prom. It *has* gotten better.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

samuel mehr@mehr.nz

while every generation thinks they're better than the previous one, parenting has advanced in leaps and bounds by numerous objective metrics for example, it is far less common today for parents to hit their kids than it was when I was a kid. this is unequivocally a good development

Based on what I'm hearing so far, EA has not been handling the layoffs particularly well (and I'm being generous). If you're an EA worker who'd be open to confidentially corroborating information I've received, please reach out. DMs open Email: chris.kerr@verticalslice.news Signal: kerrblimey.43

Games are made by people and game studios are made of people but game studios are also made of institutional knowledge, continuity, practices, standards, technology, resources, and IP. And those things do mean something, and it is a loss when they're discarded.

A calm, reasonable take about bicycle helmets? In this economy?

Laine Johnson@lainejohnson.bsky.social

Personally, I wear a helmet for my own mistakes as well as environment. But the idea that cyclists and pedestrians are expected to defend their bodies through clothing choices in the same way women shouldn’t wear short skirts to prevent assault is completely missing the point.

If you need a random color (e.g. procedurally coloring objects), you should use Oklab or Oklch color space instead of RGB or HSV. RGB may span the whole spectrum, but it does not pick fairly (leaning dark/muddy). Oklab is designed to more closely map to how we perceive color

Things that are hard to explain to people in the rest of America: the school district in a community where the median sold home is $3,611,172 at $1,798 per square foot, is doing budget cuts because voters voted down renewing a $800 per year property tax.

All Hail Howard Jarvis!!!!!

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Dad mode level-up: I was in Home Depot last night and a younger woman, on the phone with her roommate, turned to me to ask for help with repairing a hole they’d put in their wall. “How big is the hole? Good you won’t need to replace drywall. This patch kit’ll do. What you’re gonna do is….”

BUT US egg sizes were re-graded in 1974, and what is called “large” now is smaller than what was called “large” in the 50s if you’re using an OLD recipe for stolen or pate a choux you will probably need to add an extra egg

I always thought that claim was a little fishy. A sophisticated bot operation doesn’t have physical redundancy?

Kate Starbird@katestarbird.bsky.social

Y’all, I hate to rain on the dead bot parade, but the Yandex data center destruction doesn’t seem to have significantly impacted social media bots. I made temporal graphs of X posts about AfD around the time of the attack and there’s no sign of a sudden dip or residual impact on that conversation.
