It's the spookiest day of the year! Yes, that's right, it's my birthday (kinda a big one) and my mortality feels more salient than ever To celebrate cresting the hill of life, here are 4 totally achievable goals I'm setting for the next decade, in order of difficulty:

Final: Brewers 10, Rays 1 An unforgettable, unbelievable night in St. Pete. The offense erupts for 8 runs with 2 outs. Robert Gasser shoved. Brandon Woodruff closed it out. The Milwaukee Brewers are a win away from winning the freaking World Series.

Truly, Tolstoy spoke wisely when he said that each stressful semester is stressful in its own way, while all stress-free semesters are alike (in that they do not exist). Hang in there, friends!

Final: Brewers 5, Rays 4 The Brewers are two wins away from their first World Series title. Aaron Ashby is a madman. They are 9-1 this postseason, with every game featuring high-wire drama. I hope your hearts can handle it.

Together with other scientists I’m suing the 🇺🇸 US National Institutes of Health for violating our 1st Amendment rights & censoring our health science. I’m ready to shine a light on the darkest days. Buckle up, read on. This gets pretty wild… THREAD

ACLU@aclu.org

By terminating research grants like Kelton's to censor views it doesn’t like, the NIH is blocking scientists from work that would advance public health for all of us. We're pushing back. Tell Congress to demand the NIH restore the grants and stop its censorship campaign at aclu.org/nih_censorship_

Final: Brewers 6, Dodgers 4 The Milwaukee Brewers are going to the World Series. Holy crap, the Milwaukee Brewers are going to the World Series. Soak it in, Wisconsin. You deserve it. The Milwaukee Brewers are going to the World Series, and they swept the Dodgers to do it.

I was led to believe that the Brewers do not hit homeruns

Curt Hogg@cyrthogg.bsky.social

Blake Snell had gone 15 batters without giving up a base hit. He had struck out 6 in that span. The Milwaukee Brewers just took him back-to-back to flip the game on its head. They do not relent.

Most of them couldn't find Xanadu if they tripped and fell through caverns measureless to man, down to a sunless sea.

The disappointment continues with each new student that joins my lab. Nobody knows why the water can't be drunk, nobody knows that you shouldn't shoot giant birds. It's like they don't even teach Rime of the Ancient Mariner in schools anymore

Ryan Carpenter@rwcarpenterphd.bsky.social

Are my references obsolete? Don't kids these days read 18th c poets? I've alluded several times in meetings to "an albatross around my neck" only to be met by vacant stares, confused looks, and gentle inquiries around my mental health Is the Rime of the Ancient Mariner just not topical anymore?

Final: Brewers 2, Dodgers 1 A carbon copy of last year's Game 1 in so many ways, down to the final score. This time, Milwaukee's pitching reigned supreme. This is going to be some series. Series: 1-0, Brewers

In addition to occasionally posting plants or puppies (& strong opinions on apples), I mentor students interested in personality pathology. My lab is recruiting a graduate student in clinical or personality psychology for Fall 2027 so please send folks my way. Reposts welcome. Thanks!

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

Final: Brewers 3, Padres 2 How did the Milwaukee Brewers win that baseball game? Your guess is as good as any. And it also doesn't matter. All that does is they did. Somehow, someway. They did. Series: 1-0, Brewers

I'll save you the click-through: A lab at University of Copenhagen had been feeding draft manuscripts & data into "Claude Science" & then Anthropic announces a discovery that this lab made a year ago but hasn't published yet. It's plausible that Claude found the same signatures independently...

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

another day, another bit of evidence that the scientists who willingly hand over proprietary information to AI firms may experience some consequences

The moral of the story is: don't hand LLM companies your stuff. As soon as you do, it might not be yours anymore www.nytimes.com/2026/09/27/s...

nytimes.comDid Anthropic’s A.I. Really Make a Scientific Discovery on Its Own? (Gift Article)An expert at the University of Copenhagen said his team had been sharing its research with the company’s A.I. model, Claude, and that its new finding matched their work.
Ryan Carpenter@rwcarpenterphd.bsky.social

The Millennium Problem snafu would seem to suggest that if you upload the draft of your paper to an LLM for copy-editing, the company that owns the LLM could just take it and publish it themselves. And what could you do about it?

I'll be reviewing applications for a new student or two for UNC-CH's clinical psychology PhD program! Social anxiety, pain, intensive longitudinal data, all that fun stuff. What prospective applicants get if they email me (so no need): docs.google.com/document/d/1... Lab: tarheels.live/rodelab/

tarheels.liveWelcome to the Rodebaugh Lab Website - Rodebaugh LaboratoryWelcome to the Rodebaugh lab website! Here you can learn about what Dr. Rodebaugh & colleagues are working on and what research is being conducted.

I'm not breaking any new ground, but it struck me today how the "function" of LLMs is imitation: can it write like a human, can it code like a human, can it talk like a human There's no goal to make something new. The entire aim is to execute convincing forgery

This post is unavailable.

LLM writing is bad, but in the same boring way human writing is often bad: sentences full of the pretense of meaning, but nothing underneath. The internet's full of bad human writing like that If only LLMs could be bad in a novel way! Like a bad movie you can't stop watching. But it isn't capable

Ok, but, here's the problem: Pangram sucks. It doesn't provide meaningful information, it just doesn't. Yes, the people who sell it love to proclaim it's perfection. And, sure, it's great at saying stuff BEFORE 2022 is human. Now show me the LLM wasn't already trained on that pre-2022 writing.

The provost of Dartmouth, at which I teach, has been using AI to write both academic papers & national op-eds, according to brave reporting by @thedartmouth.bsky.social. Many students are already bitter about AI. This leaves us as faculty no ground to stand on. www.thedartmouth.com/article/2026...

The Brewers now have more wins (98) than any team in franchise history. Jacob Misiorowski's first Cy Young. Jake Bauers breakout. A 22-0 win and 20-0 clincher. Pat Murphy MOY again?? Healthy Garrett Mitchell. Logan Henderson. Drew Rom? Greg Jones? Luis Rengifo? Here's to you, 2026.
