“Forget tainted candy: The scariest thing on Halloween is parked in your driveway. More American child pedestrians die on Halloween from cars than on any other day of the year.” Via @vox.com. It’s also a key time to discuss SAFER streets & neighborhood design, for kids, and FOR EVERYONE. #Halloween

Just filled out like a 10-page intake form ahead of the appointment with my new dental clinic tomorrow. People, people everywhere, you are collecting entirely too much data.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Guys. Modern American secondary school and all its process-oriented overly rubric-ed micro-assignments, each needing to be done according to bespoke rules, written with the tip of your finger on glass and submitted into a semi-broken LMS. My god.

This week, NIH advisors rebuked RFK for harming #NIH and US science. Sheryl Gay Stolberg reported it. Then RFK posted calling her sources anonymous or corrupt. I'll say this hoping it does good: I'm an NIH scientist, I'm not anonymous, and RFK Jr is destroying NIH. More in attachment:

Yes, yes, now more than any other point in my life the Star Treks of the 90s are feeling so relevant on a daily basis. I'm thinking of moments from these like five times a day.

This post is unavailable.

One I CAN'T STOP thinking about it "Future's End" from Voyager. The scene where they *finally* made it to the 1990s Billionaire who is about to release technology that will, if unstopped, hundreds of years later, destroy the Solar System to let him know he needs to not do it...

...thinking he'll be like, "OMG thank you for letting me know, I had no idea, I'll stop!" But instead he's like pshaw I fucking DO NOT CARE that the solar system goes boom in 600 years because this thing is going to make me so much money.

Annual reminder to Minnesotans regarding this week: No one outside this state has any idea what you are talking about when you say “MEA.”

You know, for my job I read a lot of other people’s stuff. And I’m actually generally pleasantly surprised at how most people are still doing their own writing, at least right now.

Some of the dumber and most meaningless things related to all of this are just... are like weirdly annoying. Good job you guys, you wanted to annoy me and you did it! In fact you do it very regularly now! 😂

Related news: I reviewed emails received yesterday by two federal agencies—SEC and NIH—instructing them to update all internal and public materials to say "super intelligence" instead of "artificial intelligence" in order to comply with Trump's executive order.

By the way, have we talked about how wild it is that the HIGH SCHOOL students in and around Paris have led such a sustained and widespread protest of about the unacceptable quality and government support of their public high schools?

But no part was hit as hard as SBE, which went from an average of 800 new grants to just 91, a precipitous, 90% decline. SBE spent just 95 million on new grants, far less than its average of 247 million.

A real successful 1A day here on campus. Heavy hitters. Big student turnout. Engaged questions. My notes for the academic freedom panel is a sort of Cliff Notes of how I approach this thing. This is it. My whole talk.

Okay there are a lot of things to be annoyed about and one of them is that Jay Bhattacharya's NIH abandoned publishing Environmental Health Perspectives. Federally published peer-reviewed science journals are/(were) the best.

Will academic institutions ever learn that hiding messes and sweeping them under the rug can lead to situations that are way way way more public and harmful for ALL involved (including said institution) than if they had just been dealt with?

Yeah yeah yeah, interesting article but is this room that Christopher Olah is pictured in real? Is that his home? Is that how billionaires decorate?

When I became a voter at age 18 I promised myself I would never vote for a candidate who would not oppose the death penalty. I break that promise to myself every four years when I vote for the Democratic presidential candidate.

A victory for the government in this case would greenlight long-term mass civil detention at a level not seen since Japanese internment during WWII. It would represent the largest change in how the US treats immigrants facing removal since 1996, and remind us again that the 96 law must be erased.

There is a story to be told about how this administration keeps targeting Minnesota and Minnesotans at *every* level. This is yet another example of these targeted political attacks. They are trying hard to silence us. We keep showing up and speaking up. www.mprnews.org/story/2026/0...
