After the arrests of powerful men across the world, you might be asking why the US has so much trouble holding its leaders accountable for lawbreaking. Since Nixon, all three branches of government have worked hard to ensure they can break the law with impunity www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

The United States uses about twice as much energy per person as Switzerland or the UK. The US also has worse public health and life expectancy. Few countries use more energy per person than the US. Most of them are, like the US, petrostates.

The actual headline isn’t “the bots have formed a religion” or “the bots have invented their own culture”. The headline is: a bunch of humans have discovered a new way to be emotionally manipulated by interface geometry. — Jay Springett

The US immigrant population generated more in taxes than they received in benefits from all levels of government every year from 1994 to 2023. The Cato study provides the first-ever 30-year analysis of the fiscal effects of immigration on government budgets. https://ow.ly/jy8a50Y8kM3

I would like to trade in allllll the Democrats for something better. Like the Mamdani model, please?

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Thursday said House Democrats will demand a ban on the deportation of American citizens as a condition of winning their support for legislation funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Yes hello, former senior dev here: Every time someone says “AI does [useful thing]” you can place a safe bet that what they actually mean is “a machine learning algorithm trained on very specific high quality data does [useful thing]”

Kari Dru@karidru.bsky.social

This is specifically about AI use in humanities disciplines within academia, which is clear from context- this crap is extremely harmful in that setting. Inevitably, people show up to be like "AI finds cancer cells tho". NOT THE SUBJECT, and that conflation has been inflicted upon us intentionally.

The exhausting thing about neurodivergence is you are always chasing the next shiny thing. I don’t mind losing my stuff in my own house all the time but a new hobby every few months is a lot.

LA is a hard city to live in. No doubt about it. I've been here since 1990, with about ten months off one time when I was working in NY. That's a lot of months of making rent, dealing with the particular demands of the city, and learning about the people I share the city with.

This is from months ago now, but in my current moment, Julia’s words resonate yet again.

when you examine a text written by a human you can find layers and layers of meaning and intentionality, the complexity of the human conscious, an opportunity for one mind to commune with another outside the bounds of time and space. when you examine AI text you drown in a teaspoon of nothing.

So I get my prescriptions filled at the grocery store bc they give me a discount on gas. (Up to $1.00/gallon off) Now I have learned that I build 10 gallons of gas I earn a free gallon of milk. I feel like there’s a 9th grade math word problem just dying to manifest here.

How much do you think it costs to make a pair of Nike shoes in Asia? Before you open this thread, take a guess. Settle on a number and then compare it to what you'll learn in this thread. 🧵

We need to be honest with ourselves that just because an elected official is a “Democrat” doesn’t mean they are working for the American people. 😑

I cancelled my Spotify membership. It’s been coming for a long time but considering their broad use of generative AI to push out actual artists, promoting men like Joe Rogan and Andrew Tate, and firing humans who made the product great to give their CEO more $, they are dead to me.

Also, there is more than one way to enjoy streaming and find new artists, and it doesn’t require paying monthly dues to a multinational corporation which CLEARLY doesn’t share my values.

I realized my partner and I have over 120GB of music we never listen to, so we set up a home server on Plex instead, using an old MacBook to host it. So many good songs and artists to remember and explore, and no algorithm pushing AI slop my way.

Stopped going to Target a couple years ago when we noticed a trend of prices on the shelf being a little cheaper than other stores but the price was different at checkout. 🤨 Happened too often to be coincidental. Add DEI concerns and there’s no reason to ever go back.

Kills me too.

It kills me that there's enough for everyone. Enough food. Enough housing. Enough medicine. Enough money. Enough everything. It takes active choices to stop everyone from having enough so a very, very few can have far too much.
