I used to be a professional online community builder (1995-2020). I have eclectic interests: coffee roasting, kludge DIY, 16thC Germany, History of Surgery... Now, I just have opinions: all of them are wrong, but some of them are useful. Willing to learn.

I imagine this logic being applied to any other costumed people with personnas. "They identify as knights and kings and queens, soldiers in Napoleon's Army, and as Billy the Kid's outlaw gang. Don't let wierdo historical reenactors pick our leaders!" Anyway, I hope furries everywhere vote.

@sjjphd.bsky.social not sure if someone offered to help you test it yourself, so here is your post quoted. You can either detach it and I’ll tell you what happens on my end -or- you can quote post it again and I will detach it so you can see yourself If anything happens.

- the NIV Bible was written by satanists because they’ve simplified some of it. - the Ethiopian Bible is preferable because it has more books than the King James version. (I am not Christian. I find internecine fights of any kind funny.)

I may have popped off a little bit.

hot take time: not really a hot take, based on 30 years of designing online community spaces and fostering communities in those spaces*: We don't need One Platform to Rule Them All. This is horseshit thinking. Many platforms that allow many communities to meet their specific needs.

The moderation values of blacksky make my heart sing! So happy to see such a shining example of community-first principles in action. Anyone who considers themselves an online community pressional not paying attention here is missing out.

most blacksky users don't see the worst of the worst bc blacksky peer moderators use these filters to keep us safe! the biggest difference between #blacksky and other social apps is their team has put COMMUNITY over ENGAGEMENT they're dedicated towards making sure our mental safety is a priority 💕

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

I just wrote a thread that got nuked because I accidentally clicked the back button. Whoever has an bsky client that will automatically save my work to my drafts or even locally, is going to be my client from now on.

Goddammit. I feel called out. I'm not angry or accusing OP of any wrong doing, just feeling the need to springboard off this thread as self-reflection. I've been digging myself out of suicidal depression for the last 8 years. A symptom has been trouble with the cognitive work of long reads.

Now, some of this is because in the past two year, I have experienced some profound loss and have had to process my own grief. A lot of it is that I had been reading passively (coping for depression) for so long that I need to rebuild my active reading skills.

This discussion of literacy crisis is giving me an opportunity to reflect on the work I still have to do to not just rebuild my ability to read for long periods, but also tackle fiction that goes way beyond my personal experiences.

Not just read, but properly take in ideas and synthesize them into my own thoughts rather than loosely connected thoughts and phrases of others. I took on getting back to reading full books, but I had a bad reaction to a book I just finished. I think it's because I was viewing it as a mirror.

It was a dystopian novella that involved a disease that caused a lot of death and loss of loved ones around the protagonist. The way they grieved was *very* different to the way I view loss, death, and grief. And I recoiled. My own reaction clouded my ability to see this other way of grieving.

I haven't been able to concentrate on reading for more than about 30 minutes for at least a decade. Books get started, then dropped. My Libby TBR list is about 400 books. I want to read. Recently, I have been making good mental health progress and have been recapturing my ability to think.

How timely! Just this morning, I was talking with an old online community pioneer about how metrics becoming goals is a hallmark of TESCREAL and the problems they create. Looking forward to this!

I am super excited about this which was originally meant to be part of my book buy didn’t make the cut in the end. But i am very happy that it has found a home to @techdirt.com. A great thanks to @masnick.com for brainstorming and getting this out to the world!

Why do I get the sense a plateau is approaching on current LLM models and this is just an attempt to get out in front of a looming market contraction. Maybe I am wrong.

"Why are children glued to their screens? It must be the addictive design of social media!" No. It's that we have spent decades criminalizing kids and teens being in public spaces on their own. Malls, parks, off-hours schools yards, streets (watch an old get mad at kids on bikes), sidewalks.

This is insane. When I was in first grade my parents let me walk 3 blocks to school in the mornings, and home after it was over. The independence that I got as a child helped me so much in my life. No parent should face charges for something like this, let alone be convicted!

Oh look, Luc Besson made a movie about my Call of Cthuhlu character, Father Galatolo, a streetwise padre from Palermo, recruited into the Vatican's paranormal investigation unit to travel to Cairo to root out a cult of the Black Pharaoh. No, not really.

A lot of men confuse feminism with misandry. Feminism isn't "man-hating"; it's simply wanting all of us to be equals. I love men, too! I'm married to one, and have two sons who are, last time I checked, men. Misandry (actual man-hatred) isn't compatible with feminism's quest for equality for all.

🚨🧵 Non-consenual pelvic exams during surgery: These may still occur in ~half of US states. Last night I wrote about what you can do to avoid it - see below. Now I'd like to provide a bit more info. on the topic - this is something you may have undergone w/o your knowledge, or might in the future.

This is harrowing and worth reading and being aware of if you ever have to have general sedation.

Hellooo, Kelly! I think these are separate issues: one is a type of illegal assault very similar to that of rapists spiking women's drinks; the other is a legal medical exam in about half of US states - though it shouldn't be legal in any. In my state, it was legal until 2022, but though the bill...
