Dario Amodei, who co-founded Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot, called for a global slowdown of artificial intelligence development in a 3,800-word essay on Saturday. His appeal for a pause follows months of escalating concerns across the technology industry. nyti.ms/4AatwIK

“He added that it would probably require a global effort working with other nations, including authoritarian ones, to properly coordinate a slowdown”

Anthropic: "Let's every slow down, agreed"? OpenAI: "Agreed!" (doesn't slow down) Google: "Agreed!" (doesn't slow down) Microsoft: "Agreed!" (doesn't slow down, but no one cares) xAI: "Slow what down?" China: "LOL" Anthropic: (doesn't slow down) www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

NEWS: From deep red Kansas to Texas to Ireland, Republicans have faced mass protests at home and abroad today. Meanwhile, major AI CEOs are urging a slowdown in development, including Elon Musk. A busy day of news. Subscribe to support my work: aaronparnas.substack.com/p/saturday-n...

God machine, lol Reminds me of how the Higgs Boson's nickname was shortened to God Particle, but was originally the Goddamn Particle because it was so hard to find

I don’t know. Does anyone else think that this may be a back door way to boost stock value by hyping the product as ever so very powerful? I am sorry to be so cynical but I haven’t yet seen a bottom to what the filthy rich/owned lawmakers will do to manipulate equity holdings.

Amodei’s call for AI regulation is classic regulatory capture. As OpenAI faces legal scandals and zero log-tracking, pushing apocalyptic hype distracts from current liabilities while raising entry barriers for rivals. Wall Street buys margins, not PR stories.

The only reason any of these clowns do anything is for money and power. My guess is they can't find a way to properly monetise it or it's just never going to work the way they claimed.

they are all trying to scare us because they want to IPO. and if you make it sound scary, people will just throw money at you. "OMG my product is TOO good" said the man right before his IPO

It’s not so difficult just make strict regulations. Now you can broadcast a Putin who declares war to Europe without Putin really saying this!! It’s not healthy. When technology gets to powerful you have to delete it till it’s manageable … not so difficult!

I thought government regulation was bad. Remember the airline industry? Regulation was brought up before and the AI industry said it wasn’t necessary. This is fear that w/o a regulatory slow down a competitor will pull ahead.

Good idea. Slow down the models Amodei considers leading edge (Anthropic/ Open AI) while allowing everyone they claim is not near the frontier to do what they want until they catch up. No reason to constrain any model other than the leaders by this logic.

Dario Amodei souligne les risques croissants de l'IA. Un appel à la prudence et à la coopération internationale est essentiel pour garantir un développement sûr et bénéfique.

Desktop machines costing <$20K are increasingly able to run powerful AI models. They can't do everything a cloud-based AI can do, but they make slowing research much harder. And it would require international standards & enforcement. And trust. Which is in very short supply.

I wonder if people understand that Trump doesn’t care what happens to anyone after he’s dead. Killer AI, lethal climate, collapse of the public health system, deteriorating economy. That’ll be somebody else’s problem.

I'll take it one worse. He relishes it, because he fantasizes that people will say "life was so much better under Trump' and he thinks he'll be remembered fondly. He won't

While that is true, it is both ineffective and unlikely. By the time someone realized that there was a significant problem, many terabytes of data might have spread throughout the Internet. No firewall is safe from advanced AI.

You have fallen for a marketing manoeuvre whose intention was to scare the crap out of you and it succeeded, because now you have become convinced that a massive piece of code that only runs in a very specialised hardware environment will magically download itself to your toaster. It will not.

Oh sweetie. The LLM is running in a specific rack of GPUs that exist in a specific location and have no other purpose than running the LLM. It can be switched off immediately and absolutely nothing of value is lost.

They are overbuilt text prediction algorithms. The only real concern is that nobody is being criminally charged for felony hacking. These hacks are being prompted and then large amounts of time and money are being spent so the hack can take place.

I see. This whole 'the robots are gonna kill us all' freak out was choreographed because these assholes are panicking that their product has no ROI and they have to keep the hype going somehow.

There it is, the cashflow runs dry and their models are unreliable and/or not ready. Offering an off ramp, so that their investors won't bone saw them. The funny thing here is will the VC guys let this slide or believe it. The bubble pop is what's inevitable, if you ask me.

I hate how he calls for working with OpenAI for a voluntary slowdown, Sam Altman agrees with his letter, and.... where's the slowdown?

I have to ask - why are SO MANY tech CEOs etc essentially nutters with EXTREMIST philosophies????? They should NOT HAVE govt contracts - or have such control - WITHOUT REGULATION - of advancements that could bring such harm to humanity and the planet.

We've been trying to slow it down by refusing to allow the data mining centers in our communities. I dont know what more can be asked of everyday people. Maybe stop creating AI slop for entertainment, diy political memes, garage sale flyers and the like. Cease/disist orders on platforms forcing it?
