Shakedowns, but leftistly...

Dr. Samantha Hancox-Li@sjshancoxli.liberalcurrents.com

looked at in longer perspective, it's striking how much this resembles the premodern system of exclusion, rents, and personalist connections, which was--and this part's important--radically worse than the modern system of impersonal rules and general taxation

One of the most salient aspects of today's politics is how everyone imagines a conspiratorial "them" controlling things behind the scenes. Elon Musk is literally powerful enough to affect the course of the Ukraine war, but he's still imagining faceless puppet masters who need to be unmasked.

Postwar attempts to rebuild American downtowns for the convenience of suburban drivers fail because cities cannot compete with the suburbs on ease of driving and parking; and attempting to do so destroys the vibrant street life that makes cities worth living in or visiting in the first place.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

If your downtown still has many wide and fast one-way streets, then your priority is to move cars as fast as possible thru a weak downtown. It’s NOT to create a vibrant downtown, help downtown retailers, keep people safe, support walkability and accessibility, reduce pollution, etc. #TrafficSewers

Wonder what Kirby Delauter's up to these days?

Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.

1. RM is of course entirely right. Sulla wiped out his enemies and totally remade all of Rome’s institutions, and it *didn’t work* 2. I think it’s also extremely important to understand *why* it didn’t work, as Ronald Syme memorably put it…

Replying to @opinionhaver.bsky.social

feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

New York City has recorded the fewest murders through September since before 1960, Baltimore since 1962, Philadelphia and Detroit since 1964, Oakland since 1967, and New Orleans since 1969.

Teens…and the poors.

mtsw@mtsw.bsky.social

Even hotter take: the fact that ebikes let teens in the suburbs suddenly have freedom to move around the public realm unsupervised is precisely why many older people are trying to ban them (using safety as a pretext)

gotta say there’s something almost poetic about Trump incentivizing less fuel efficient vehicles as the Iran war keeps pushing up the price of gas

Amee Vanderpool@girlsreallyrule.bsky.social

Trump announces he will sharply scale back fuel-efficiency rules for new cars and light trucks, gutting one of the government’s most significant efforts to reduce gasoline consumption and speed the country’s shift to electric vehicles.

Decades and decades of a national policy and zeitgeist that amounts to 'nobody needs to care about social studies' and we're now in an unwinnable war with a foreign country whose culture and leadership we did not understand based around geography we ignored. 🤷‍♂️

Been considering starting to teach and drill my 5th graders on basic map locations, even though nobody gives a shit about social studies.

Two crazy things takeaways from this article: the Baltimore Sun's daily print circulation is down to 11,800 and the newspaper in The Villages - the giant retirement community in Florida - has the ninth highest circulation of any daily in the country. pressgazette.co.uk/north-americ...

"emotional support munitions"

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

Basically, the United States is running short of key munitions because the insecure man-children running the country keep firing off expensive stand-off emotional support munitions as a desperate act of gender-affirming self-care. Alas, there are not enough TLAMs to make Trump or Hegseth into men.

“Established cities that are dispersed and auto-centric are likely to have higher per capita emissions and thus can reduce emissions by focusing on creating modal shift and improving public transit systems… as well as focusing on infilling and densifying,”

Climate action in DC could mean moving more people into the low-carbon communities we've already created, along the transit lines we've already built.

Reminds me of a few years ago when our local hospital wanted to add a back entrance to its parking garage that would route traffic through a dense, walkable residential neighborhood. An administrator said the goal was “ to keep the traffic away from where people are walking.” (ie: the parking lot).
