A 2025 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, Omar Yaghi is the son of Palestinian refugees who grew up in Jordan. He just left the US to move to China after raising concerns about rising anti-immigrant sentiment, like the kind shown here. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/china-than...

We tried "everyone is entitled to an opinion" for three straight decades and all we have to show for it is four thousand cases of measles and a death cult running the government. It's time for people who don't know what they're talking about to shut the fuck up.

This is an excellent thread:

🧵 Matt Yglesias is one of the biggest reasons the Democratic Party leadership is so feckless, cowardly, and lazy. I'm not exaggerating. Yglesias is often a featured speaker at private Democratic Party events, despite almost always being wrong. Let's discuss...

truly a wild time to be alive when the cryptography world is split between those worried about quantum computers and those whose private key is “4”

Incredible reporting on a deeply depressing story of corruption in Congress Anticorruption politics is what brings down authoritarians around the world, but it's hard to do that when you're corrupt too (even if less corrupt) www.propublica.org/article/nava...

It's fucking wild how openly "trying to put a bandaid on oil before the midterms" is Trump's only goal and something he's using our nations armed forces to achieve and all the normal "uh you gotta respect the troops!" guys don't say anything about it

Shipwreck@shipwreck75.bsky.social

White House is considering targeted strikes on Kharg Island, which handles approximately 90% of Iran's oil exports. The goal is to force concessions on Tehran's nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz before the US midterm elections on Nov. 3.

It's one thing for governments to do stuff people disagree with in a normal partisan environment. It's another thing entirely when governments, from the local to the national, brazenly disregard the will of most, if not all, of their constituents in eager service to the plutocracy 's wishes.

seriously go fuck yourself. if you have 8 zeros in your investment portfolio, Adam Schiff will be your bitch for free.

Without American wine on Canadian shelves, Canadians are also missing out on tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue they would obtain from selling our wine.

I'm not sure a government run by literal clowns could do more damage than this one:

Re the Sally Rooney news, I was looking up data on arrests under terrorism legislation the other day, and hadn't quite realised how utterly bonkers the effect of the Palestine Action prohibition had been. That big purple spike is basically all PA-related arrests.

I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.

I think among my greatest pet-peeves are non medical professionals giving my family members medical advice. "There is a great non-narcotic injectible for pain called Torrid-" seriously shut the fuck up, I'm trusting the people who went to school for this not some half-ass project manager.

This is a very sweet story 💖

You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...

The two main tendencies in national Israeli politics right now are "expulsion and annexation of the Palestinian territories" vs "civil separation under the authority of an Israeli police state", and virtually all mainstream US commentary simply refuses to engage with this.

Not really sure where a bunch of liberals got the idea that they can’t win without throwing trans people in the garbage, but they’re stupid and cruel and wrong. If you want a human sacrifice so damned bad put gavin newsom in the wicker man

I’m really trying not to go for cheap heat on here but you can write off any politician that does not support trans rights without equivocating because it’s the morally correct thing to do and additionally because it means they’re not above selling anyone out.

I'm not sure by what precise mechanism this happened, but prior to this week I thought Ed Sheeran was the actor from The Office who hit Dwight with his Prius. It was weird to me that so many people talk about him 'in the culture' but I never examined it. 🤷

"Its purpose is to rebuild bonds between leaders in the artificial intelligence sector and Democrats who are demanding new rules to regulate the technology." -Put a different way, this is a lobbying effort whose target is Democratic operatives, and whose goal is to prevent Dems from doing their job

NEW: As AI companies provoke intense scrutiny, former Obama White House official Jay Carney has joined an effort to “rebuild bonds” between Democrats and the AI industry. Dem operatives are joining the AI industry in droves – we’ve tracked over 100 former Biden officials who made similar moves.

After reading some of the recent pubs and discourse around US higher ed.… I should just stop right here. But here are the three major fallacies of much of what’s out there, three contexts that are missing, and the one big thing that is driving me around the bend (actually already there, but). 1/

This dude Paul is a walking advertisement for why developers need MORE liberal-arts education and he's too goddamn under-educated to see himself doing it. What a pity. 😐

Feel like we've all memory-holed the era where blogging, podcasts, and wikipedia were considered the equivalent of slop

I would pay good money to see any number of left-of-center pundits chained to a chair and forced to address this point at length. Ezra Klein specifically is in the wilderness on this specific aspect of American politics, and it's infuriating.

Patrick Wyman@patrickwyman.bsky.social

Trying to manage these people as if they're standard participants in a multicultural democracy misses the point, because they have no interest in multicultural democracy or being one component of it; they want a system that treats them as a privileged class lording it over everyone else.
