📣 Postdoc coming soon to MILLO @ UH Mānoa! Methods-development at the intersection of underwater #acoustics, #AI/ML, computer vision + #marine #ecology, using large acoustic-array & imagery datasets. 🌊 📍 Honolulu, Hawaiʻi 🗓️ Start by Jan. 1, 2027 Details soon!

Have I somehow missed prior emails about the NSF "Brand" or is this a new thing? I thought this email was spam at first. The 2026 NSF Brand Standards Manual is an 80 page document.. doesn't really seem like the most pressing issue at NSF right now, but what do I know?

It’s a point that has been made before: These people are here without authorization only because the administration revoked it. It is as if Trump were somehow to strip citizenship from every Democrat.

Bradley P. Moss@bradmossesq.bsky.social

These people had protected status. They lived here legally. They worked, they paid taxes. They made lives. Raised families. Now we’ve dehumanized them. Ripped away that protection and told them to get out. This is a stain on the soul of this Nation.

🌊 Every day, ~4,000 Argo floats observe the world’s oceans. They provide essential, open and freely available data that improve weather forecasts, early warnings systems, and climate predictions. Behind this network: more than 30 yrs of scientific effort. Thanks to all those who keep Argo alive!

Can you imagine the uphill battle facing new PIs? Postdocs? PhDs finishing and looking for a job? "[The memo] directs the section’s 15 program managers to stop seeking funding for any proposals... “until we are able to provide more details.”

Been wondering why NSF isn't spending most of its FY26 appropriation? A $1.5B tech initiative may be the reason. And big cuts to hundreds of research programs could be just the beginning of the bad news. www.science.org/content/arti...

Still on pace: one death roughly every six days in ICE custody. Reminder: gov't thugs are plucking innocent migrants -- often legal ones! -- off the street, kidnapping them, putting them in concentration camps, & allowing many of them to die. On our watch, in our names, with our money.

He is the second person to die at Miami CC this year and continues the morbid pattern of one ICE death every 6.0 days.

Flying from Zürich to LA yesterday we followed a great circle route north over Greenland. I happened to look out the tiny window in the door and saw this awe-inspiring view of Baffin Bay. I've never before gotten to see sea ice during this melt period - leads forming, water exposed.. 🌊

Originally there were a few small ice bergs and massive numbers of smaller ice in between, with large gaps of open water. As we moved closer to Northern Canada / Nunavut lands the ice was more solid, with fewer leads and only small gaps between large masses of ice.

As someone who studies gas exchange and has tried to develop new parameterizations of under ice gas exchange, this was incredible to see. I was sad when we were finally over land, which of course was also beautiful. What a marvel. It took a long time before I could see inside the plane again.
