In the past three weeks I've sent more than 60 parcels via Australia Post. Now we play the fun game of seeing how many get lost.

“I make flowers grow and animals emerge from bodies because nature happens, whether you want it to or not. It will eventually reclaim its space. Like a flower growing through a crack in the pavement.”

“Almost all my source images come from the Internet Archive, from the old scans of magazines there. I don’t like things being too clean or slick or new, I like them to be more real and lived in. I want you to know these images come from a real object made of paper and ink.”

Add this to the annals of making a rod for my own back. Every copy of Ex Libris has an individual unique identifier, an ISCC. Every copy has a sticker added to the rear inside cover with its unique code.

It's been more than three years since I last generated those stickers and do you think I can remember how to do it? Why did I not write that shit down? Curse you, past Simon!

The weirdest thing has been happening. A single post that features Ex Libris went apeshit on instagram and three weeks later I've nearly completely sold out of every copy I had in stock. Contemplating a fifth (!) print run.

[Seamus losing his shit at the noises in the trees] Me: Shmoo, they’re just bats! They’re greyhounds with wings!

Sara first worked with cutups and collage after leaving school, she didn’t fully embrace the medium as an artist until later. "And this time I decided to post the work online. Before long, I had people approaching me asking how they could buy my pieces. It took me completely by surprise."

“‘These are the images that speak to me and speak for me. I think of it sometimes like journaling. I’m not necessarily making images about myself, but about the things that are on my mind, the things that are around me or speak to me. It’s very intuitive.”

the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity. read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

I’d like to think my years working at if:book gave me a good gut feeling for finding potential collaborators, people with the spark and the embrace of the absurd that suggest they might be well disposed to join this strange world of weird books. You know, people I won’t scare off.

Our connection came extraordinarily close to never happening. My initial email to her was caught up in the now years-long vendetta gmail has against me and had been trapped in some kind of spam-adjacent purgatory. After weeks with no reply I saw this post and thought…espera qué?

Aprovechando el tema de la IA para recordaros que si queréis cubiertas para vuestros libros me tenéis aquí, una admiradora, una sierva, una esclava. Os dejo algunas que he hecho.

This was the first piece of hers that caught my attention. Her output is prolific and enviably consistent: fierce and forthright, honest to a fault, occasionally exasperated, but always with a wry humour, a wink and a nod at the audience.

I took Seamus to the post office today and, despite the sound of garbage trucks that filled him with fear, he was brave and we delivered the books. He's chilling in a low stimulus environment now.

That argument drives me nuts too. “How dare you criticise our cult. You haven’t even been to one of our ritual sacrifices.”

Thinking still more about the AI booster discourse that tries to undermine critical work on the topic by saying "They don't even use it, how can they possibly know what they're talking about." >>

A government hosting and promoting #AusArtDay to get folk to fund the arts while also working to legalise the lawlessness of #AI companies who've committed a global art heist and continue to openly launder all that stolen stuff through apps - for profit - is some next level kind of hypocrisy.

"I slammed my bollocks in a sandwich press and my bollocks got really smashed and cooked. It's made me rethink how I use a sandwich press."

Me, describing some tech bullshit: Man, that's an unnecessary layer of abstraction. Kid: You sound like me watching Twin Peaks. Me: No, those are essential layers of abstraction.

To be clear, he agrees with me about Twin Peaks. He was just being a smart arse because that's how we roll in this house.

Wtf makes people so susceptible to magical thinking with this shit? If a slinky unexpectedly stops going down stairs should we be worried it will soon experience emotions?
