What the actual?! When you know things are bad, but you never expected they were *that* bad.
My city centre churchwarden drama: people have been digging up human remains to get at the drugs that dealers bury in our churchyard My friends countryside churchwarden drama: birds nested in the church and after trying everything including flying a hawk inside she had to get a farmer to shoot them

This wonβt be reported widely, but Jason Arday has been cleared of plagiarism for a second time. Still nobody has been held accountable for this manβs death.
A reminder: Jason Arday was innocent. "A fresh investigation by scientific publisher Taylor & Francis has concluded without substantiating plagiarism allegations against Jason Arday, the former Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge."
As Hans Rosling would say, so many things trend towards the better. Compared to the world in 1980? Healthcare is basically magic. Expectations for women. Mental health awareness. Freedom of sexuality. Access to electricity. Safe water. Information. Not evenly applied. But so different for so many.
Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But whatβs something that youβve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I admit to being confused. I don't think creeping through a cloudbank and out the other side could ever be anything less than wonderous, no matter how jading the rest of the experience. Do people really get bored of that?
i am on a plane sitting next to a lady who looks 40ish and has informed me that this is her first time flying she is visibly excited. she asked the flight attendant how much a soda costs and was happy to learn that drinks are free on airplanes. she's taking lots of pictures. i love this for her

Please know this is not hyperbole. People will end up dead who would otherwise have survived. Trans people won't stop getting sick. But they will stop going into hospital when they need to. So more will die. And if they brave it? The mental toll will be huge. That will also kill people. Shame.
This will kill people
When we started Keep Ukraine Connected (providing network equipment) and first heard of their government's wholehearted adoption of StarLink, we were sceptical as hell of subscription model satellite tech in a warzone. Oh, looky here...

I've been weird my whole life. My family is deeply neurodivergent so I grew up without much useful social guidance / experience? For all my nerdiness, I didn't fully accept and embrace my weirdness until I met Goths in my 20s. I'm queer and disabled, but weird is the thing I most identify with.
QUESTION OF THE DAY: This sounds like a joke question, but it isnβt. If it doesnβt apply to you, fine. But itβs a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious. When did you first realize you were weird?
I grew up on internet forums. I was 12 when I first got the internet (1992) and finally found a tribe of people I could get on with (hellooo Discworld people). That went a long way to healing my broken nerd heart, but I was still pretty concerned with melding into the background. Goths changed that.
