Okay buddy, the problem isn’t that you and your wife have this amazingly trusting relationship. It’s that you’re a full grown founder engineer man and you have baby brain trust of AI

I've been married to my wife for 22 years and together for 28. When doing home tech support, I I have never deleted her stuff without asking first.

everyone else will holler about the other more important things to snipe this fool for but Holy FUCK How do you not have (multiple) time machine(s)???? The whole reason to use Apple is that the last solutions company to cater to consumers. The shit is integrated, use the integrated features holy fuc

Maybe they just don't fight about it. Probably means they have enough money that they have a fat margin of error and aren't going to bounce checks because the other person spent too much. (They probably don't write checks but you get the point.)

Tolstoy knew enough to not trust a 3rd party to treat his work as being as important as he treated it, and did that work, himself to be sure it was handled and stored properly. So, he knew more than Mr. AI-is-my-new-mommy.

While everyone else has made far better points, wtf does he mean by "no messengers"? AIM, MSN, IRC, Yahoo, and probably more messengers all existed 18.5 years ago. And, if, for some reason, he means when he wasn't at the PC, cell phones were reasonably common for anyone earning a "salary"!

This is a solid reminder why everyone needs to be properly backed up, insured, and understand that there is an above zero chance anything we do and say online or in the vicinity of any phone/camera/etc will be publicly available. This person does not sound much dumber than any avg tech bro. 1/3

2/3 These people also all think they are at least as smart as any human has ever been, and possibly can ever be. So they see AI "code" better/faster than they can understand, then think it "works" better than mere average humans (us all) can... or at least it will be able to soon We're on our own

3/3 Major companies and services we've all relied on to not accidentally post vids of us on the toilet or msg profanity to our grandmas or send our CC# to strangers will be (and likely already have been) handed over *live* to "AI"... shitter, less well-tested tech than what it's meant to maintain.

I once had my purse stolen. The awful experience taught me never to leave my belongings unattended. More than once I've lost data. Each awful experience has made me more diligent about multiple backups. This guy has never lost one of his *own* files.

Not excusing the guy, but this really should be a wake up call for everyone with all the ai crap going around. Yes, it might still need some moron to push the button for now, but that won't always be the case. Back up EVERYTHING, ideally on an external hard drive.

It’s going to do the same with all our vulnerable populations. AI is going to say oops and a bunch of people whose only desire was to go about living their lives will be killed off because AI didn’t know any better because the people behind them don’t know much either.

There are not enough words to explain how pissed and done I would be. I have years of photos as well and if some dipshit did this for funsies. I would lose my shit. Especially since there are pictures and videos of my father who passed 3 years ago.

I ran an experiment with Claude once to rearrange a pile of notes. I instructed it that it was not to run `rm` or delete any files. It moved some files to `/dev/null`. I'm sure in some sense that's technically not deleting them.

If he's a venture capital guy, his "job" is finding something people enjoy, buying it, loading it up with debt, enshittifying it to squeeze every last cent from the enjoyers, then selling up and moving on just before it collapses because of the enshittification. AIUI, anyway

Im not atupid enough to marry a dumbass like that. But if I did he would either never be found or get divorced papers. Possibly both just to make it look like I didn't know what happened.

I’m sorry but the “oops” is so funny to me. Damn AI went: “Whoopsie daisies I just removed over 15 years of family memories. Dunno where they went!😄”

Oh my gawd! These fuckers have relinquished every decision to a dicerolling machine. Soon they will be bereft of the ability to wipe their own asses, og procreate (which I guess is a good thing)

If you can’t be bothered to do a once over of your desktop and organize it yourself, there wasn’t anything there of value.

I actually really enjoyed cleaning out my screenshots when they saved directly to desktop. I'd get to go through and see all the stuff I'd thought was funny and have a second laugh about it.

Pro Tip: two types of backup, two USB-C SSDs. One for TimeMachine, the other for periodic SuperDuper! image backup. SuperDuper! backups can be booted by connecting the drive to just about any Mac.

At first, I thought this guy is responsible for Data Version Control (think git for data like, you know, images) which would be super funny. I checked, but, thankfully, no. But at least I got to see this garbage:

I'm a QA who in my spare time regularly tests to see whether the latest and greatest AI works properly (they don't) and I have seen so much bullshit behaviour that I don't even fully trust running them in a VM anymore. Probably overkill but I use a second machine that can only access the internet

...eg. not realising there's some new option that's unsafe by default I need to toggle on the latest version of VirtualBox/whatever. It's more a case of "if I've made a mistake this fucking AI is going to find it a lot quicker than I will"

I'm sure someone's mentioned it, but why is he using Claude to rearrange his wife's desktop instead of his own? Was hers the messy one? And, did Claude literally tell him it made a mistake, or did he stumble across it, cause, if it knew, wth did it still do it?

I give very few Fs about most of my data. My kids' pics tho, many Fs. I have Google photos and two offline external drives. It's not quite 3-2-1 but the net solution is plenty of 9s. At least two copies can't be remote encrypted or AI ✨Magic Deleted✨

It's been nearly a day since i saw this, and i still can't get over the "She didn't have Time Machine." You erased 15 years of photos she had saved, and you're blaming the AI for doing it and her for not foreseeing it?

I mean, the details are more complicated (he overwrote her iCloud too, and got lucky Apple has an iCloud Time Machine equivalent), but it doesn't really change the fact that he screwed up MAJORLY and blamed her and the AI for it instead of recognizing it wouldn't have happened without his idiocy

No one here has read the alt text obviously, but it’s clear he tweeted about this while it was happening (he thinks it’s a happy ending because he recovered the files). There’s a non-zero chance that she doesn’t even know about this.

They say that pain is information entering the body REALLY FAST. My hearty congratulations to this would-be master of the universe on all the information he has gained. May it be a consolation to him as he sleeps on the couch.

My favorite part of this story is that it's not clear his wife wanted her desktop organized for her. "Move fast and break [other people's] things" is very on-brand for VC. He'd *better* move fast when she finds out he zapped all her stuff so he could brag about AI.

I cannot fathom the depth of credulity bubbling away in the brains supposedly residing in the skulls of people like this. It’s not intelligent, and their trust in it really calls into question their own intelligence to do shit like this. This ought be where he abandons this shit, but I bet it’s not.

Considering losing a computer that had basically the entire photo history of our family from 1995-2008 saved to it's HD was basically considered a canon event in our timeline, his marriage is doomed
