Tesla brand destruction happened so quickly that Tesla annual financial statements will only catch up to it next year 😂

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

I don't think recent memory has featured an industrial company with as much of a reputational fall-off as Tesla, both because of the decrease in quality of its cars and the increase in blithering fascism in its CEO. A decade ago a Tesla was a status object; now it's a vague embarrassment at best.

People should pay attention to the bigger picture on data centers, before it becomes too late. 3000+ new data centers is about 2500+ too many... What about the water, ground water pollution and other very real and larger issues?

Meanwhile in Indiana…@robertlandrumjr.bsky.social

Why all these huge data centers?

Batteries, who knew they could be so useful, uhm, everybody?

BURGUM: When the sun goes down, solar produces zero electricity HUFFMAN: I want to enter into the record this amazing new technology that apparently the secretary is unaware of -- it's a battery

almost every sysadmin on planet earth, and all container providers has already disabled all the relevant modules, but, there are many zero's, for many different os, device os and apps on the Internet...

The threat, known as Dirty Frag, allows low-privilege users, including those using virtual machines, to gain root control of servers.

Teaching a machine to read thoughts is something that has existed for some time. New tech will be miniaturization and mass manufacturing of production tech, and then of course blocking tech and tech to alter transmissions in real time...

Digital Brain@yourdigitalbrain.bsky.social

Imagine your thoughts being read without invasive procedures! Researchers have developed a technique that decodes imagined speech by leveraging brain signals from listening. Could this be the future of communication? 🤔

So Google wants to be more like Apple and Apple wants to be more like Google. 🤷‍♀️

The Verge@theverge.com

Details are sparse for now, but we do know this is a major new initiative in the laptop space for Google, seemingly designed to succeed Chromebooks with something more capable: a platform running a long-rumored new operating system based on a fusion of Android and ChromeOS.

The study finding that hearing affects walking speed is so interesting!

If you find yourself walking more slowly than you used to, it might be time to get your hearing checked, writes columnist Julie Jargon. A study revealed a correlation that could affect your future well-being.

For any type of attestation there will always be "trusted" agents. Think what happens when hardware devices are lost, stolen or compromised in any other way. Hardware attestation always implies vendor lock in whereas software attestation could be more easily migrateable between hardware suppliers.

GrapheneOS@grapheneos.org

Apple and Google are gradually expanding their use of hardware-based attestation. They're convincing a growing number of services to adopt it. Google's Play Integrity API and Apple's App Attest API are very similar. Apple brought it to the web via Privacy Pass, which Google intends on doing too.

People choose to give up their digital freedom in exchange for what they perceive as convenience. In truth the digital future could easily become slavery, control, dominance and very closed and locked.

LLM has a ceiling, the rate and speed of improvements are declining, GI is the next thing and it is completely different technology.

The Economist@economist.com

The smarter AI models become, the more vital they are for prosperity at home and geopolitical heft abroad. But the risks grow, too. Elites in both Beijing and Washington are unnerved by the rapid advance of the technology

Australia's target of 82% renewables by 2030 has long been dismissed as impossible. Batteries and domestic solar are putting it within reach. Tech improvements, cost decline are important. But so is government policy. Nice one, @chrisbowenmp.bsky.social, keep going.

If you truly love your job, doing it will not feel like "work" it will feel like you should be paying to do it! 😭

Europe can become more technologically independent while still teaming up with U.S. tech hubs like Silicon Valley, European Commission startup chief Ekaterina Zaharieva told POLITICO in an exclusive interview.

Clean energy, solar and wind, are also more healthier for the planet and sustainable for the future of life on earth.

Mixed results 😂

NBC News@nbcnews.com

The largest study ever of school cell phone bans finds that they offer decidedly mixed results, with teachers reporting fewer distractions when students lock their phones away during the school day, but little evidence the bans quickly bring improved academic achievement or better behavior.

The majority of humans are concerned about AI and not excited by it.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

AI is the first technology shift whose externalities include increased cost of living. We are used to technology causing some job disruption or social changes. However AI is also making things more expensive from power bills to consumer electronics given memory shortages. Major backlash territory.
