Having a lot of fun revisiting old posts and giving the ones that never had their own hero some love.

I was thinking about atproto more and had a thought: no one needs to know or care about the protocol. we just need to normalize the idea that it’s bonkers to allow any company to own part of your identity it’s like how you used to lose your phone number if you switched carriers. that sucked

I’ve made my peace with llms and appreciate how they debug things faster than I could by hand but I will say this. I’m totally fine with hand coding the same way most are with crocheting. It’s such a relaxing and rewarding activity on its own. No one that crochets feels like they are in a race. 🧶

I don’t understand why software engineers have a tendency to feel like they need to be in a constant race. It’s okay to periodically slow down, relax, and gain insight from the patterns between the stitches and how they fit together.

I'm excited to announce that the PLC Organization now has a statute! And a bank account! And a @standard.site publication! All the important stuff. The PLC Org is an independent Swiss Association meant to operate the PLC directory, which collects and distributes signed updates to atproto accounts.

made a post in the atmosphere developer forum about timelines for rolling out spaces (aka permissioned data) and community groups to the full network. tl;dr: a couple more months of iteration and prep, then major PDS operators could coordinate to go "general availability" around mid-November

@thisismissem.social @divy.zone and I recently went through an exploration of how the browser can help you login to websites with atproto accounts. We recently presented to the FedID CG and here is a sneak peek in case you couldn't join! This is early but we'd love your input before we go too far!

All db products support automated backups under the assumption they are your app’s data DR story. I’ve never worked in a company where we’ve exercised them in the context of data DR. Meanwhile all atproto apps are built on a data DR system and use it all the time. It’s just called jet stream. 🤔

It would be very painful to have to perform a data DR from a db back up in the moment you need it because it’s exercised so rarely. Jetstream backfill feels natural because you do it all the time. “If it hurts, do it more often”

introducing my @atproto.nyc hack project: troposphere (the layer at which birds fly) it's a viable alternative to Ozone that's designed to work with Coop, so you can use Coop's UI for review queues, case management, automatic actions, auditing, metrics, and child safety! github.com/julietshen/t...

Back in nyc after a peaceful week in Canun sun. I was welcomed home by my phone beeping about a flood warning last night and a taxi hydroplaning on the way back to Manhattan. There’s no place like home.

as cool as I think @tangled.org 's DID repo uris are, the Configure your remote to git@tangled.org:did:plc:randomhex repo create prompt does not mix well with jj git clone git@tangled.org:did:plc:randomhex because you end up with a directory full of directories named randomhex instead of repo names

so excited to get this in folks' hands and to see what people build with it! it’s been a lot of work getting here & i'm proud of where it's at check it out, bang on it, break it, see where it doesn't work. let's make sure this is something we're all excited about & can take pride in building on

atproto.comThe Atproto Spaces Alpha is LiveAtproto Spaces, formerly known as “the permissioned data protocol,” is a new extension to atproto that enables non-public data. The alpha is now officially open. Here’s how to develop with it and what to expect as we work towards the full release.

To target multiple classes with the same prefix, you'd typically have to resort to brittle attribute selectors. To make things easier, CSS is getting a new selector: the “Class Prefix Selector” (`.foo-*`). Check brm.us/class-prefix... to get the details. (Browser Support: None 😛 — just resolved!)

so cool! love this approach — same bsky network, different lens mostly the same content, but lots of cool additions like conference pages, discovery for papers, research-focused profiles, longer posts & more lea.ac

All that this really shows is if you use AI to do your homework, just like getting someone else to do it for you, you will pass the homework task but not learn the material. There's absolutely nothing surprising here.

Woah.

Is there a name for the logical fallacy where a piece of software is tremendosly improved with a better architecture and only mildly by the use of a different programming language where weak minds ignore the architecture part but latch onto and attribute all improvements to the language part?

Our (software) ruin is inviting needless complexity to a dinner party and after a long evening of dancing offer it a room to spend the night as it’s much too late to drive home safely. The next day complexity decides to move in and now until eternity lives in your project rent free. You pay taxes
