so excited to get this in folks' hands and to see what people build with it! it’s been a lot of work getting here & i'm proud of where it's at check it out, bang on it, break it, see where it doesn't work. let's make sure this is something we're all excited about & can take pride in building on

atproto.comThe Atproto Spaces Alpha is LiveAtproto Spaces, formerly known as “the permissioned data protocol,” is a new extension to atproto that enables non-public data. The alpha is now officially open. Here’s how to develop with it and what to expect as we work towards the full release.

Or is this login only supported for accounts hosted on Bluesky PDS? (if so that should be mentioned) My account is on @altq.net if that matters? If I read the announcement correctly, I need to run the alpha reference PDS with spaces support myself for this?

no i'm able to login with my self-hosted acccount does your account generally work with other apps' oauth? you don't need to run a PDS if you just want to make an account on the Bluesky-hosted one (if we can unblock you on this)

should be resolved now! funnily enough it did not have to do with did:web'iness, more related to some stale state on our end after the migration of the prev account associated with that handle.

As someone who has previously begged for this, I am morally obligated to (and very excited to! :)) try it out and build something with it ASAP!

This is brilliant work. It's timely as well - and I can see a lot of potential applications for it. Given that digital sovereignty, AI and it's impact on public web/social media, and a host of other hot button issues around, there's a need for a new substrate on which to release content.

>It may sound a little “heavy-duty” to say each space is a mini-atproto, but spaces are actually very lightweight and low overhead. getting flashbacks to early git days and the challenge of changing the existing mental model of branches as full copies

@dholms.at I wonder - since this revolves around spaces, would something like "mutuals" work - where someone can only see someone else's data when both sides have each other in their space? (think facebook friends - the friendship is only valid when accepted)
