Gulf of America It’s pronounced “Gulf of Mexico” Say it wrong and you’re instantly marked as someone visiting from another sadder, hatier reality

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Not as obvious from the headline but it’s good to see at least one car reviewer savaging whatever this was (spoiler alert: it’s vaporware designed to bamboozle gullible financial reporters)

Whether the electric automaker's second try at the Roadster will actually make it to the streets remains to be seen, though Musk claims it will go into production by 2028: arstechnica.visitlink.me/8Y2te3

Literally heard a record scratch & then a narrator saying "Now you're probably wondering how I got in this situation as I was about to eat some dumb kid's Tootsie Roll pop..."

Advanced shock troops in the Australian invasion of America spotted in Minnesota! (Does raise the question of *why* the Aussies would want us)

A Minnesota hunter and his dog got a lot more bird than they were seeking when they came across an emu in the woods Saturday.

All this, the world well knows, yet none knows well To shun the heaven that leads men to this fucking hell.

Ok don’t let’s get carried away but I found something genuinely good on Threads.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

“he did not realize ChatGPT would generate ‘apparently out of whole cloth, fictitious witnesses, testimony, quotations and authorities in a form that appeared coherent and plausible.’” My dude, that’s how LLMs work & why every provider’s ToS disavows responsibility for its product’s accuracy.

The Santa Fe New Mexican@thenewmexican.bsky.social

The New Mexico Supreme Court issued a sharp rebuke Friday to a well-known local lawyer for filing a legal brief that referenced fictional witnesses and testimony apparently fabricated by the artificial intelligence he used to help him write it. www.santafenewmexican.com/news/local_n...

Optimist: the cup is half full. Pessimist: the cup is half empty. Bsky Reply: Carbon dioxide emissions are running unchecked, El Niño is setting all-time records, the Colorado River is running dry and you’re wasting water on a silly Bluesky meme? What are we even doing here?

That said, let us take a moment to thank our Bluesky Trans and Furry Elders for freaking out Jack Dorsey so much he bolted and left us this nice social media playground, taking most of his crypto chuds with him. We thank you for your service.

Ah once again Bluesky images just don't load, yet more broken shit here, very nice. Still have 3 "unread" DMs despite all of them being read too. Good stuff

The arc de Trump has the quality and craftsmanship of a high school homecoming float. It is the high point of the fair.

To be fair, not many people are dumb enough to stand in the reflecting pool…

Tens of Americans were taking in Trump's 250th anniversary thingy, this Globe photo taken from the Ferris wheel shows. The story: www.bostonglobe.com/2026/06/27/n... Folks, visit Philadelphia or Boston for real 4th of July celebrations (DC didn't exist and New York abstained 7/4/76, so fuqem).

fyi, that AltNOAA story about a whale escape that's making the rounds is completely made up/AI generated and the OP is aware and thinks spreading fake stories is fine generally speaking the "altgov" accounts are firehoses of misinfo that are not worth your precious attention

I lost my mentor and friend last night, and the world lost one of the most human interpreters of technology at a time when his voice is needed most. @om.co never shied away from calling out bullshit but he also was so in love with the potential that technology represented. I will miss him terribly.

Since I did do my PhD in cyanobacteria growth and treatment optimization modeling AND work in the water treatment industry, I’m gonna share my theory as to what’s happening here and how to fix it. People are focusing on the painted bottom of the pool increasing residual heat, and while that 1/19
