Replying to @eschares.bsky.social

We include graphs to break down patterns by publisher, OA type, and year, and again look at APCs listed/offered vs. APCs chosen/paid.

🚨Update: Our analysis of global APC expenditure has now been expanded to cover more publishers (7 -> 14) and more years (2019-2025). We estimate $15B in APCs paid over seven years, $3.7B in 2025 alone. Elsevier crosses the $1B threshold by itself in 2025. arxiv.org/abs/2608.16322 #ScholComm

🚨 Preprint! We combine our recent open dataset of #APC prices with the article counts per journal-year from #OpenAlex to estimate how much the academic community has paid in APCs over the last 5 years. A. $8.349 billion ($8.968 B in 2023 USD) $2.5B in 2023 alone. arxiv.org/abs/2407.16551 #metasci

@cometadata.bsky.social has been demonstrating it's possible to do big things! Matched over ~400K preprints 1/ ~2 MILLION authors to RORs—now in an openly available dataset. Come learn what we've been up to, what's next, and how to get involved. Next community call next week. Details below.

COMET@cometadata.bsky.social

1.9 million author entries. 2.1 million affiliation entries. 1.75 million matched to ROR IDs. That's what our fine-tuned open-weight model extracted from 430,000 arXiv preprints. Join us on 21 Jan to discuss the results. 📅 Register: datacite.zoom.us/meeting/regi...

Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵 Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

Elsevier at its best: they only embrace #openscience when it makes money and does not endanger their assets. Now that Crossref data is CC0 and used by 3rd parties (OpenAlex, Matilda,...), they just keep data in their systems @keanbirch.bsky.social #openresearchinformation @barcelonadori.bsky.social

Najko Jahn@najko.bsky.social

There seems to be a decrease in the coverage of affiliation metadata in #OpenAlex, particularly with regard to journal articles published by Elsevier since 2024. Only around 6% of Elsevier articles published in 2025 have affiliation metadata. subugoe.github.io/scholcomm_an...

Nature Sci Rep publishes incoherent AI slop. eLife publishes a paper which the reviewers didn't agree with, making all the comments and responses public with thoughtful commentary. One of these journals got delisted by Web of Science for quality concerns from not doing peer review. Guess which one?
