My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

I read this after I discovered @emmanewman.bsky.social on her lovely podcast with @aptshadow.bsky.social (Starship Alexandria! It's amazing!). It's quite special, I really enjoyed this book and it make me feel things that sci-fi doesn't often make me feel!

Reread this one after many years - still love it. There’s gorgeous writing, a slow-reveal alien mystery, the corrosive effect of lies, & a heartbreaking depiction of mental illness and one woman’s unraveling. A propulsive build to a fantastic ending. “Planetfall” by Emma Newman. #BookSky 💙📚🪐

If? If? That's a big "if" there, pal! Also I had to read that second sentence twice. Strip away the bullshit, and it translates to: "We will judge students by the document we receive from them, not whether or not they actually made that document.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

Gonna keep shouting this until people get it: THE DOCUMENT ISN'T THE WORK, THE THINKING THAT PRODUCES THE DOCUMENT IS THE WORK. IF YOU DIDN'T DO THE THINKING, YOU DIDN'T DO THE WORK.

Hi, I’m a sighted alt text user! Here are some reasons I use it: - Slow Internet on an airplane - I’m over 40, I have no idea who that celebrity is - Bluesky broke images again - My vision sucks and that text is too small to read otherwise - Conveys further context and authorial intent

And robot labs won’t fill the gap. Much cutting-edge science—certainly in neuroscience—is done with cutting-edge methods that are not commodity approaches which robots can automate. If it can be easily automated pharma or science corps have done it already.

Continuing my celebration of two and a half decades of FOXP2 research, please enjoy this fact-checker thread on why the gene doesn’t tell us anything about extraterrestrials (a topic I never thought I’d have to address in my career as a geneticist, but these are strange times).👇

Simon Fisher@profsimonfisher.bsky.social

25 years ago, we implicated rare variants of the FOXP2 gene in a severe speech disorder. I’ve spent much time stressing that FOXP2, while interesting, is not the mythical “gene for language”. Weirdly, on occasion I also need to explain why it’s not “proof of aliens”. Full disclosure in this 🧵. 1/n 🧪

Oh hey. It’s October now. Did you get an advent calendar that educates you about snails while helping us educate people in Philly about our local biodiversity? Not yet?? Well what are you waiting for? It’s time for snail facts! SquidFacts.net

People who have been following my progress through this vale of tears may be aware of the fact that I have been slowly but steadily working towards housing security: due to a confluence of lucky circumstances we've been offered our current home at a price well below the current market value.

Honestly it's really frustrating how hard it is to look up yesterday's weather. Like, I remember the forecast, but what actually happened, by the numbers???

Scientists will be freed from the onerous labor of having to understand anything they are doing or being able to believe any published result, at long last.

What is the counter-argument to making a social media platform that actively places a limiter on the virality dynamic?

Colin@colin-fraser.net

Bluesky shows that this is a highly organic emergent phenomenon. Some people hoped we wouldn’t see this kind of thing with an “algorithm-free” social network but alas, people are called by instinct to dogpile.

Dolly didn't just say be who you are and you are enough -- and she sure did, a lot -- her whole deal was, "whatever you are, BE MORE OF THAT, BABY, GO FOR IT, I LOVE YOU." all we can do is try to pass on a little of that energy in this mean world.

1/ You may have seen headlines that AI created this cancer vaccine, but that's not quite right. Merck and Moderna just announced strong Phase 3 results for a personalized melanoma therapy. Here's what AI actually did, and didn't do.
