Proud to represent @defenddemocracy.eurosky.social at today’s EU Commission high-level event on democracy.
It’s the last event before taking a mini sabbatical & going offline.
Have a great summer; see you on the other side.
From 1 September I’m available for coffees & new opportunities 😊
Our report on the European Democracy Shield got adopted!
What a privilege to be 'appointed expert' to the rapporteur and work on policy recommendations to strengthen and defend democracy in EUrope.

Especially proud this recommendation got adopted:
'welcomes the creation of the European Centre for Democratic Resilience; [..] proposes broadening its scope and mandate to include civil preparedness and societal resilience to escalating hybrid threats.'

Very useful insights here. The bit about how everyone thinks they’re the comms expert hero is painfully familiar. I’d say all this is also in tension with investing resources in our own digital infrastructure, where we wouldn’t need to do all this. Unfortunately, an overlooked long-term strategy.
There's nuance here about "how do we use platforms owned by the fascists". You *have to understand the political purpose of the platforms* in order to use them to subvert authoritarians. For the most part, Americans simply do not. Centrists (including DNC consultants) do not. Major media does not.
"Good candidates, campaigns, movements can still win" from the far-right.
And unless they want our democracies to become autocracies, the centre-right should finally learn an old lesson:
You cannot out-stink a skunk. By trying to, you're actually helping move the Overton window to the far-right.
Hard to transpose electoral lessons from one country / system to another. But the contrast between Lula's broad, majoritarian front (overcoming internal differences & integrating civil society movements) and Europe's fragmented lefts is striking.
After Hungary and Poland, Serbia becomes the third Central/Eastern European country in few years where massive youth mobilization has contributed to the electoral defeat of the ruling autocratic party.
Serbia: The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS-EPP) has admitted defeat in today's parliamentary elections. The Student List (SL-*) has won a majority of votes.

The same US president who treats our friend Canada as an enemy is trying to give Alaska to Russia, a country whose absolutely overt foreign policy is to destroy us. This superpower suicide has to be stopped.

EU’s digital sovereignty push runs up against budget cuts.
“Policymakers have doubled down on funding digital infrastructure. But Europe has yet to earmark similar public support for the democratic accountability layer necessary to hold such technology to account.”

No technological independence allowed, apparently:
"European companies face “devastating” retaliation from Washington if Brussels presses ahead with plans to restrict American rivals such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX from parts of the European market, the US ambassador to the EU has warned."
Why do sanctions matter?
For example: to prevent Russia from developing new technologies to first kill Ukrainians and second give them the ability to better fight the rest of the west
www.washingtonpost.com/world/2026/1...
It's already been said many times that the U.S., under President Donald Trump, was turning its back on Ukraine. But the past few days show something worse than abandonment: Trump is now actively helping Russia win the war.
2027: election year during which several EU radical right parties are expected to do well. However, it is clearer by the day how their strategy on key issues, such as NATO and Ukraine, now diverge.
Here is Meloni's statement to the Senate today. Gone are the day of 'building bridges' with Trump...
Ukrainian presidential advisor Serhiy Beskrestnov confirms Elon Musk's Space X crippled Ukrainian capabilities last night.
In other words, the US deliberately sabotaged European defence operations mid-mission.
Every country in the world should move away from buying American hardware ASAP.
When Ukraine destroys Russian data centers, hoards of aggressive right-wing bots disappear & the internet becomes friendlier. So much of politics is driven by the internet & so much of the internet is driven by Russians who want to hurt us. Shouldn’t we do something about that, given that we know it
Germany and the other Northern austerity frugals say the EU budget is "bloated".
Here's how that "bloated" 🇪🇺budget compares:
Federations:
🇪🇺: 1% of GDP
🇩🇪: 12%
🇺🇸: 24%
Unitary states:
🇳🇱: 46%
🇫🇷: 57%
Russian strikes killed over 80 Ukrainian civilians in two days. Moreover, it has stepped up its hybrid attacks against Europe, both EU Member States and NATO Allies.
Suspending sanctions on Russian diesel provides Moscow with more revenues to wage war.
The larger public in Europe may miss this. But every diplomat and international relations expert and pundit here sees this and will remember for a generation: after the US promised to protect Ukraine if it gave up its nuclear weapons, it is now openly supporting Russia.
The great American betrayal.
In awarding this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee wants to remind the world that the rule of law – national and international – underpins the system we have set up to ensure peace and resolve conflicts non-violently. Peace requires justice.
An honour to share my expertise on the EU's preparedness and resilience against hybrid warfare with a group of future crisis managers.
They were visiting Brussels for the 'Master of Crisis and Public order Management', on the importance of European collaboration and solidarity in times of crisis.
Of course when Russia said Ukraine had bioweapons labs what they really meant was that they did.
There's a lot we don't know about the current situation. Russia should be bringing in experts from the WHO to clarify and advise. Will they?

the appropriate way to convey this is that trump, musk, huang, amodei, zuck, altman, bezos & pichai agree to maintain a system of impunity for AI harms.

The writing has been on the wall for more than a decade.
We must acknowledge that Russia is waging a hybrid war against democracies, especially in Europe*
Hybrid threats and attacks are real and know no border.
The frontline is everywhere. And everyone is on it.
#DefendDemocracy#HandsOffOurEU🇪🇺
Russia’s public threats against our Baltic States are completely unacceptable.
Let there be no doubt.
A threat against one Member State is a threat against our entire Union.
to be clear, the admin is alleged to have deported AT LEAST 25,447 individuals TO COUNTRIES THAT ARE NOT THEIR OWN with, evidently, ZERO PROTECTIONS. this is a scandal and crime of historic proportions.
the @forbidden-stories.bsky.social investigation is so deeply important. put the illegality to one side. the trump admin is brazenly sending ppl to third countries, lacking any cxn, without any guarantee they won't be sent on for torture, abuse, persecution... it's horrible.
European Parliament demands firmer EU response to hybrid threats.
'EU must move from a reactive to a proactive strategy.'
'Cooperation with NATO needed to strengthen European preparedness, resilience and deterrence.'

Netherlands' annual State of the Union coincides with International Democracy Day.
King Willem Alexander urges all of us to protect and maintain democracy, as:
"Democracy is a state of mind, which needs to be alive in all of us."
Netherlands King in State of the Union:
"Democracy needs constant protection and maintenance."
"Important that we don’t reduce the concept of democracy to the will of half the people plus one. Democracy should unite people, not play them off against each other."

Joseph Stiglitz’s pillars for a progressive AI agenda for the economy:
First one is competition policy.
Second one is regulation & accountability.
The most important (third) one: using the increased productivity to create a better society — to get what we value.

The fact that AI is sending unintendedly pregnant women to anti-abortion clubs is a direct danger to women in Europe. And it happens to play right into the agenda of Trump and his tech oligarchs.
Together with @maritmaij.bsky.social and 74 other colleagues, I am submitting written questions today.
‘Even today [in the Trump & Putin era], Europeans are “children of an age of comfort”.. who scarcely realise that humanity is not a passive state but a conscious act.’
