There’s a small but loud group of townues who insist UM is about to implode because of the demographic cliff. This data demonstrates my retort: It will be the last domino standing in the mitten.

In one of the first statewide data points for enrollment this fall, Michigan's public universities saw their first collective enrollment decline since 2022. The smallest institution saw a 14% decline in just one year.

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

There’s a lot riding on that initial “if”. The author also assumes that evidence, structure, argument, and accountability are somehow separable from “how each sentence was produced.” I care very much about whether academics use ai, and the idea that I shouldn’t enrages me.

Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

This is such a cool space. Designed by STAMPS faculty and students! Also they have this tinned fish sticker! (Thanks to @donmoyn.bsky.social for the heads up)

#A2Council Hey Ann Arbor, Early Voting starts today on campus, at UMMA or Duderstadt! Come on in! You can bring your absentee ballot in and tabulate it, or get a ballot and vote it just like on Election Day!

In which I continue to inadvertently terrorize the NIMBYs with banal observations. (The opening comment claimed “bicycle extremists” “want to destroy transportation quality of life for everyone except for bicyclists”)

I saw some truly horrible visual aids today. Some adults never mastered glue stick usage and poster board aesthetics. With adult money? I would be unstoppable.

And re: my rant of course all of this can be traced back to homeownership being the primary driver of wealth creation in this country and the perverse incentives that drives.

I was at a meeting today where this topic came up. The combo of Michigan’s Headlee amendment and Prop A passed in ‘94 create structural deficits for municipalities and now I’m paying special millages to fund trade training in high schools bc the funding structure is so bad.

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

And don’t get me started on how some municipalities still haven’t recovered from the recession that decimated property values even as those property values have recovered *because of these tax policies*

And people who are paying wayyyyy less property tax than those who bought more recently are *still* complaining that they’re over taxed somehow. It’s silly! Do you want city services or not? What do you think pays for the leaf vacuuming you’re always whining about wanting to return?

Ann Arbor has a hold harmless school funding millage but limitations mean that we’ve passed an additional millage to pay for facilities upgrades. Teacher pay issues are a result of district mismanagement but how we fund schools has made it worse.

SAVE THE DIVISION BIKEWAY EXTENSION. The planned extension cannot happen unless Carey Street is converted to one-way. Tell CityCouncil@a2gov.org that you are in favor of the bikeway and the conversion because these improvements support our climate, transportation, and safety goals. #a2council

The dullness, the blandness and lack of viewpoint was the hardest thing to catch but now it grates on me when I encounter it.

I have just come across a 2022 essay arguing that a better metaphor for Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality is a basket of apples and I am both baffled and furious. I have to go yell at my friend who is a metaphysician about this.

Corruption and inaction are the norm in campus policing--even beyond what you think you already know about other police agencies. There is good reason that people are calling for the abolition of campus police departments specifically right now. They maintain an elite lawlessness on campus.

Impossible to understand how anyone could look at Rufo's career and conclude he was someone engaged in a "forthright defense of meritocracy." Rufo's entire career is built on the idea of purging people who don't think or look like him from positions of power.

Every week, the Muppets have to put on a show to salvage a new institution: the Kennedy Center, the Supreme Court, the No-Mask Lesbian Bar, the Wonka Experience, Kozmo Dot Com (this has a time travel dimension, à la Quantum Leap), Cafe Loup in the West Village, democracy, the third season of GLOW

Every semester the provost sends around guidelines for student military deployment. Because things are…the way they are for the last few years I have always briefly panicked when I received it because it makes me think war or a draft is imminent.
