Not only no culture, but no *commons*. The dependency on the capitalist overlords will be complete, because you can’t ask for help or context from others when there is no common frame of reference. This has already happened in coding, the first space where they destroyed the commons we’d all built.

union person@junlper.beer

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted

This post and Dmitri's next.

If Elon Musk and half the Tesla C-Suite were currently in jail because Grok spent weeks generating CSAM-on-demand while they memed about it, Altman and the rest might be a bit more cautious about letting their little robots commit share price friendly press releasable crimes.

"The term “lame duck” would be haunting any other president’s sleep. But the concept is alien to Trump. He spends more of his time telling people about his architectural plans than he devotes to Iran, AI or the economy. Insoluble problems hold no interest." My column. as.ft.com/r/928f5cb7-6...

A brilliantly-reported and vitally important investigation from us today. Jaw-dropping, heart-breaking findings. So proud of the team, but especially @jamesodonnell.bsky.social and @eileenguo.bsky.social www.technologyreview.com/2026/09/21/1...

Enjoyed the series, somewhat to my surprise.

Last year I had the thought, "Maybe it would be nice to write a collection of stories all set in the kind of places I'd expect to find if I stepped through these portals I photograph on my walks?" It was. And it's now published, and available here: blackwells.co.uk/bookshop/pro...

A thread of interdimensional portals I've found on walks in the British countryside.

I don't know about y'all, but as a kid I absolutely loved all-ages compendiums of weird extinct animals. So this year, I wrote one. And then @stievenvdp.bsky.social illustrated it, and the results will knock your socks off. HOW TO SURVIVE PREHISTORY. Out April 27, 2027. You can preorder it now!

Ever seen this, @rullsenberg.bsky.social? It must be near your power station.

The rather bonkers Babington monument of c1538 at St Winifred's, Kingston on Soar. It's richly covered in carving including over a hundred little people cavorting with barrels. This is a pun or rebus on the family name as a tun/ton is another name for a barrel. #MonumentsMonday

picking a side in a face off between street fash and the RNLI is not fucking Sophie's Choice, it's strawberry ice cream or a bucket of shit. and the Home Office go for the bucket every time.

Graham Farmelo is such a nice man that I'm bit surprised (but like Philip pleased) thst he's apparently gone so hard on Hawking's more unpleasant side.

Jack Stilgoe@jackstilgoe.bsky.social

A brilliant @philipcball.bsky.social review, with a sensitive discussion of how hard it is to talk honestly about Hawking www.theguardian.com/books/2026/s...

It's almost incredible, except we've had two years of Labour appeasing racists.

80 year-olds with pro-Palestine signs: arrested as terrorists. Greens planning to block a road, to highlight an existential crisis: sent down for years. Masked far-right thugs blocking roads and ports, using intimidation, obstruction & threatening behaviour: no arrests. The real two-tier policing.

It's been quite a few years since I last went to Enf of the Road Festival and while I'd love to ho back, I just don't think I'm capable of navigsting the site anymore, but I still like reading the reviews and I'm glad it's retained its soul. www.theguardian.com/music/2026/s...

Great thread on Papal things that are probably not true

Odd This Day@oddthisday.bsky.social

Hurrah! It’s the 534th anniversary of the day Rodrigo Borgia became Pope Alexander VI, proving his eligibility for the role by dangling his knackers through a special chair with a hole in, because that story is ABSOLUTELY TRUE* *well, apart from all the bits that aren’t

I don't think any Americans who follow me need any encouragement to vote in November, but it doesn't hurt to have this out there.
