Retired clockmaker of the atomic persuasion. Formerly at the US Naval Observatory. About half of what I post isn’t serious. It’s up to you to figure out which half.

This is kinda funny. That old joke about how you shouldn’t look to programmers to predict the future since they couldn’t predict the millennium would end. Powerful executives expected the status quo would persist forever?

Schooley@schooley.bsky.social

That this is in THE WASHINGTON POST is almost too much irony to bear.

You could not waterboard this confession out of me, much less get me to put it in an interview. Can you imagine her kid's middle school enemies getting wind of this? "You suck so much your mom needed Chat GPT to say anything nice about you."

David Gura@davidgura.bsky.social

cool, cool

I think we need a law that says that these need to be pictures of actual food, prepared in the restaurant - not ai, not artist’s conception and not artificially-enhanced-in-a-studio.

dave wagner@davewagner.bsky.social

a UK food delivery service experimented with AI-generated images for restaurant menu items that lacked pictures. they stopped when customers reported seeing some unusual new dishes. a tiger-prawn dish became a bowl containing actual tiger cubs. friends, i think the tech may not be ready.

Tell me you don’t know how polls work without saying you don’t know how polls work.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Mike Johnson: "When I'm in these big arenas, I ask for hands -- 'Show me your hand if you've answered a poll in the last six months.' There will be like three hands among 300 people. I'm telling you, these polls are off. All of them."

If you polled anything close to 1% of the electorate that would be more than a million for a nationwide poll, which is ~1,000x more than are polled. To be fair, he might just really suck at math

This 19th c lady’s multitool was found in the pocket(!) of an antique (1872) garment donated to the historic clothing archive at my employer. It features a button hook for fitted gloves and a tiny corkscrew. The corkscrew is too small for wine & was probably intended to open apothecary bottles.

2, since I‘ve met and had dinner with Steven Chu, who was later Obama’s Secretary of Energy

Sky Marchini@sky.skymarchini.net

To flip some discourse script for a bit: what’s y’all’s Obama number (ie degrees of separation with the former president)? Mine is 3

AI firms want you to believe their fraud bot is alive so they won’t be held responsible for the fraud bot’s crimes. But there is no gray area here, they hold the on/off switches in their very human, very prosecutable hands.

Complete dick move, but : if it came from a legit Knicks/MSG email address, it’s not phishing.

this is fucking appalling. i already knew james dolan (who owns the knicks and madison square garden) was a douche but this is next-level. www.nytimes.com/athletic/771...

the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity. read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

How will they blame this on Biden? Meeting are ongoing.

"Ordinarily, moving historical items within the building is a deliberate process overseen by curators. Hegseth’s staff dispatched its own team to relocate an Eisenhower globe. They dropped it...The resulting gash appears to be several inches wide." wapo.st/3WF2YQo

It’s one way to hang on to the notion that virtually everybody agrees with him. The few that don’t are paid/forced to oppose him.

One of the most salient aspects of today's politics is how everyone imagines a conspiratorial "them" controlling things behind the scenes. Elon Musk is literally powerful enough to affect the course of the Ukraine war, but he's still imagining faceless puppet masters who need to be unmasked.

When you’ve latched on to the idea “everyone must love me, everyone must agree with me” it must be a conspiracy when there are hints that it’s not happening

Let me tell you how it will be There's one for you, nineteen for me 'Cause I'm the assman Yeah, I'm the assman Should five percent appear too small Be thankful I don't take it all 'Cause I'm the assman Yeah, I'm the assman

Trump: "I'm studying his body. I've never studied the body of a man before. It's not my thing. Nothing wrong with it, of course. But it's never been my thing. But I looked at his ass. I will say this again and again until election day: Polls are bullshit, turnout is real. I want to believe in Blexas (h/t @katelynburns.com who always cheerleads me on this) but we only get there if we get every last person we know who supports Texas D's to the polls.

Last reskeet could say for the 2010s that it sucks because they released a beta test version of their product, to be incrementally changed through interminable updates

Assembling something and am disappointed in the choices they made in the assembly kit. Screws go into a recessed area and the short arm of the hex key is too short to tighten it all the way. Using the other orientation reduces the possibly torque to about 1/4, at the point you need maximum torque.
